A German should never manage the England team. I know that could be considered controversial these days but for me it wouldn’t be right to see that happen. Sven and Capello was bad enough.
Davinson Sanchez played a blinder too, by all accounts. I think that we may have moved him on a little early. We didn't replace him quickly enough and he may have suited Postecoglou's game.
Ange moved him on last summer That being said, given Dragusin is in our squad now, Davos could have performed in a similar role as a backup CB option who has pace and aerial threat - though it has to be said Davos' first touch is clearly a step or two below that of Romero, Mickey Van or Dragusin and that might count against him
This is where you puzzle me. Every international tournament you slag off England fans saying ‘it’s coming home’ but Argentina (a country you have zero connection to) win the copa America and you say Esta volviendo a casa which translates into it’s coming home.
I'd love to hear Southgate explain what he thinks he got right and wrong in this tournament. It's probably not the best way to judge a manager, but I think it would be enlightening. A narrow loss to Spain in the final is respectable overall. The performances and path to get there were less impressive, though. For me, he made some initial selection mistakes, picked an unbalanced XI and took too long to make changes. The left hand side was the obvious issue, but there was also a distinct lack of creativity and goal threat. For a squad with so much talent and so many goalscorers there just weren't enough shots or chances. Players that could've improved the squad? Tyrick Mitchell and James Ward-Prowse give obvious solutions to glaring problems. Grealish, Rashford, Maddison and others would've added to the pile of unused subs, too.
It also has to be said that Portuball only really works when you have a wrecking ball up front, most obviously with Drogba, Diego Costa or Lukaku - yet none of the strikers that Southgate took come close to fitting that description of someone who can crash through defenders if they have to While he has somewhat of an excuse as there aren't many English strikers who fit that description, that does once again take us back to the issue with him trying to fit square pegs into a Resident Evil lock puzzle - as well as the glaring fact that Harry Kane could perform in the Brexit Ball of the ubermensch, Conte or Tuchel yet Southgate has habitually done a better job of stifling him than Premier League or Bundesliga defences have
I think with polarisation of power into City you have to accept that most English managers have little chance of winning anything because the top jobs go to glamour managers
I agree but still think managers might view the Newcastle as a better option than England. If Southgate leaves (unsure if he will) then the next manager has to win the World Cup or Euros to be a success. That’s a very high bar for anyone to reach. England have never been great to watch bit would we all be happy if England plays fast flowing football but get knocked out in the last 8 of the next tournament?
But club football has risen in status and the financial rewards which go with that. Top managers tend to have top club jobs now. The game has changed.
In two games at Qatar we were absolutely superb. Iran and Senegal. Positive, attacking football but without the naivety and lack of discipline that has marred previous tournaments. That football vanished from the moment Luke Shaw scored against France, and hasn't been seen since.
