Gus Atkinson takes his 3rd wicket to become the first debutant to bag a 10-fer at Lord’s since Alec Bedser in 1946.
Gus now on 11-86, the third best figures on debut in Test history. Jimmy is certainly secure in the knowledge that his succession is being established before his very eyes.
What a lovely baton passing moment. The England great signing off as a new star produces the best ever figures for an English player on debut.
Ben Stokes has become just the third player to achieve the double of 6000 runs and 200 test wickets. Seems to have slipped under the radar, but he’s in an elite group with Sir Garfield Sobers and Jacques Kallis.
As bad as we've been this competition, we could have been just one point behind 3rd place had our matches vs Middlesex and Glamorgan not been washed out. (And with Essex and Somerset still to play, overtaking one of them would have still be in our own hands).
Can’t quite work out how many runs we required off last ball & what was hit by who? Presume Benny but …
We (Hampshire) needed six runs off the last two balls. Benny Howell got two runs off the fifth ball, helped by a mis-field. Benny then scooped the last ball (a 'ramp shot'?) and it went for four, giving Hampshire a five wicket win. Very impressive!
Stunning innings by Pepper. Maybe one of the best ever in the Blast. Sussex dropped him on 35, and he punished them big time. If the recent t20 WC was the end of the international careers for the likes of Moeen and Bairstow, then Pepper has got to be in the conversation for a call up. He's too good just for county level. Brutal hitter.
That was a painful innings by Weatherley. But at least there's still time left for the others to maybe catch back up.
Even if our bowling attack was in form, I doubt we would defend 157. The fact that it isn't means I expect Somerset to cruise this chase.
After several successive years of making the knockout stages and even finals day, this year's performance has to be underwhelming to say the least. Perhaps the three no results have had an impact but that would have yielded three more points at best and still behind Gloucestershire, Essex and Somerset in the race for top 4 places.
