You sure? I’ve heard that Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by The Beatles could possibly be as well, although I’m not that certain myself.
Snowblind, Sweet Leaf - Black Sabbath. White line fever - Motörhead. Ha'Way EJK, even Train To Bangkok is about drugs, and I'm certain you've heard that one.
Sorry, I should’ve engaged my sarcasm filter on my reply. I know that lots of great rock songs ever written have drug sex or alcohol references in them.
I remember that Paranoid re-entered the charts in 1980ish so I duly bought the single. Snowblind was on the B side. As a naïve 13/14 year old I had no idea that it was about cocaine. Likewise I didn’t know that Sweetleaf was about drugs either. I had a very sheltered life back then. I just thought the music was great and I sang along blissfully unaware of the deeper meanings.
Same mate. I bought paranoid in 80 as well, that's when I really got into rock music....AC/DC, Maiden, Rush, Scorpions, Motorhead...the list goes on. Music that's stayed with me all these years. 1980 was a great year. One of my mates asked his Mam to buy him the Paranoid single, she came back with a single by the Piranhas...Tom hark I think it was called.
I wanted the AC/DC live album If You Want Blood for my birthday, so one Saturday me, my mum and dad all went into Sunderland. Eventually we ended up at HMV in High Street and I picked up the album. My mum saw the cover (Angus with a guitar sticking in him) and said she wouldn’t buy it. Now, bearing in mind this was in 1980 and the days when lots of people bought records and I was just about to turn 14 and self-conscious about a lot of things, I’ll never forgive her for what she did next. She saw an album next to it, picked it up, tried to give it to me and said in a voice loud enough for people to hear, “why don’t you get ABBA, we all like them don’t we.” I must have turned bright red and I just wanted the ground to open up. At this point my dad stepped in and read the room and said that if I wanted the AC/DC album I could have it. But you are right, like you, this music has stayed with me forever. I can listen to lots of different styles now but classic rock and metal has always stayed with me. Rush became my favourite band. Scorpions, Judas Priest, Rainbow, AC/DC and Motörhead were staples on my record turntable though.
Listening to DESERT ISLANDS DISCS now on, the bloke Rob Delaney on is brill never heard of him before , no ZEP so far but a but a great selection too date including a beautiful Sinead O Connor play on an Everly Bros classic . Real good guy too and worth a listen. Its my fav programme and LL has really grown into it since she took over.
There was a time you couldn't have paid me to watch this. But, since I saw Joe Cocker live, in the grounds of an old Italian palace, I've come to realise that there are times when someone opens themselves up so much you have to turn your head because it's too personal. Joe, bless him, did over three hours when the crowd would've been happy with an hour then a couple of encores. And you know when someone is respected when their band will do anything to have their backs. Yes the music and production may not be perfect, there aren't any costume changes and the performer sweats like a pig ... ... but there's heart and real emotion, surely what music should be all about. 'Something told me it was over When I saw you and her talkin' Something deep down in my soul said, 'Cry, girl' When I saw you and that girl walkin' around Whoo, I would rather, I would rather go blind, boy Then to see you walk away from me, child, no Whoo, so you see, I love you so much That I don't wanna watch you leave me, baby Most of all, I just don't, I just don't wanna be free, no Whoo, whoo, I was just, I was just, I was just Sittin here thinkin', of your kiss and your warm embrace, yeah When the reflection in the glass that I held to my lips now, baby Revealed the tears that was on my face, yeah Whoo and baby, baby, I'd rather, I'd rather be blind, boy Then to see you walk away, see you walk away from me, yeah Whoo, baby, baby, baby, I'd rather be blind.'
I keep forgetting about this thread, and it’s brilliant, have a lot to catch up on. Another one I like
originally lyrics/song by J J Cale. Clapton later turned it into a hit … just a bit of random info … to while away the afternoon. JJ Calea albums are worth a listen if you haven’t already
