Honestly never noticed... But it might be true... I'm going to ask my wife to tell me a headline about Apple, should a new iPhone be released to see what she says. I would certainly say "Liverpool are Champions" and "Apple are releasing a new iPhone"... she's on a work call at the moment so can't ask her yet... and since I'm working from home today, she's the only American I have immediate access to.

As for skill vs lottery... it was extremely lucky... BUT I will point out that ANYONE could have beaten you if they predicted correctly. Everyone had the potential to win.

You stand to get 19pts if Netherlands is eliminated. The minimum score possible for someone, even if both teams are eliminated in the group (but you predicted correctly) is 22pts... that's the minimum score with two correct predictions.

(although if you get bonus points for golden boot too, not everyone could have beaten you)

Thanks for that. It was more about considering a collective like a team or a government, for example, as singular or plural. Once that’s established, using has or have is easily determined. For instance, Americans consider their government as being singular - the government has issued a warning ..... - whereas we regard the government as plural - the government have issued a warning.

Funny thing about my children, especially when small. They would say something to my wife (in an American way) and then turn to me and say the same thing in a British way. I don't think they were consciously doing it, I think their brain just subconsciously switched to a different way of speaking.

So I can't test out the have vs has on them.

UK & Ireland announced as the hosts for Euro 2028...

The host nation didn't have to qualify, they get a bye straight to the finals.

UK & Ireland is five countries; England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland and R. Ireland.

It's a maximum of two home nations given a bye to the finals.

    England are providing six stadiums

Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland one each

    R. Ireland is one or two depending on the report you read.

Who should the two nations be?

Obviously, if R. Ireland provide two, it would make sense for the two to be them and England since they're contributing the most stadiums.

However, should England sacrifice the bye and let one of the others have it since England will qualify anyway?

If so, how do you decide who gets the bye(s)?

I started doing the Wordle puzzle in the NYT about a year ago and subsequently started doing some of their other word games that you didn’t need to subscribe to play. Funny thing is, some of the puzzles accept the English spellings and some don’t.

No. England won't automatically qualify (unless they win the Euros). If they keep playing they way they have- they might not qualify.

There are two possible fair ways:

    1) Random Lottery.
    2) The home nations use their international breaks to play a home nations tournament instead of waste them on meaningless friendlies when not in active qualification for World Cup.

Just found this from an article by Martyn Ziegler in the Times in September -

The plan seen as the favoured option by Uefa would be for all five hosts to play in the qualifying groups with the two automatic spots held in reserve for any host nation that fails to make it. If three or four host countries fail to qualify, the best two would take the reserve spots.”

I think that's fair... and keeps the team sharp by meaning they have to play meaningful games instead of just friendlies.

It took a while to get my wife to use ANY phrase that would differentiated between singular/plural. (I didn't want to influence her response so I always asked in a way that didn't phrase it one way)- but when she finally did answer... Nozzer is correct... she did treat Apple and Liverpool as singular rather than plural entities. She said has instead of have.

I'm surprised after 30 years in the US I had never noticed that difference.

I read a lot and all my favourite authors are American so I tend to flip in and out of British v American grammar without noticing, most of the time. The only thing I’m consistent with is English spellings although at times my devices default to American spelling.

Yes, when I'm on the phone it always converts everything to American spelling. Its annoying.

Sounds reasonable to me but slightly unfair to England when they're the main host providing the most in reality.

There's so many sides in it and England are assured to be there that in reality all they are doing is ensuring locals provide a bit of colour for the tournament group stage.

It's be a damp squib if there were games with zero home interest.

    Anyway, it'll be grand.

If someone was out into a coma in 2018 by watching Southgate England then they'd have missed

    World Cup semi final
    Euros final
    Blood cup last 16 (poor)
    Euros semi final min

The problem is they'd wake up take one look at the screen and think they only fell asleep for a minute but they are not bothered and fall back into a coma after 2mins of this next game.

You'd hope they'd wonder why henderson isn't playing and why coratia changed their kit to orange.

TAA loses the ball in possession, opposition don't score.... Gets slaughtered for a week about it.

Rice loses the ball in possession, opposition score.... Coms barely mention Rice had lost the ball, if England lose wonder if Rice will be in for the same stick? Doubt it.

1-1 and penalties it is then! Won't score our equalizer until the 85th minute though.

England all the ball for six minutes, don't score.

Dutch have the ball for 20 seconds, 1-0
