If I remember rightly we didn't even put a price on Kane back when City wanted him so it wasn't really down to City being unable to afford him, it was just a case of they got told to basically do one by Levy. We rejected their £100m bid shortly after they paid that amount for Grealish and they then seemingly gave up the chase (or maybe they made a second bid of £120m that also got rejected? Not sure if I've imagined that though). Knowing Levy, back when Kane had 3 years on his deal that summer, it would've likely taken a world record fee to have sold him/ consider selling him, like how it did to sell Bale and I think the record is/ was Neymar's to PSG for £200m. He's pissed me off a lot over recent years but I have always respected his stance(s) when it comes to selling our superstars, he'll always do his best to either prevent the sale or squeeze every penny possible out of the buying club.
I think they may have offered £120m, I can’t remember if they definitely did make a second bid or were rumoured to make a second offer after the £100m got rejected. We got £100m from Bayern.
Depends how you look at it. We got an extra two years out of Kane after City’s bid(s) got rejected and I’d much rather have had that than an extra £20m. Contract situation dictated last summer’s fee too.
You've missed my point above. Circa £20m doesn't make much difference to us anymore. So while we're not yet in the same financial league as United, Real, City, Liverpool etc., we are also a ways ahead of the likes of Villa, Brighton and Newcastle who probably wouldn't sniff at making an extra £20m. Our problem was more in the fact that at various points between selling Walker and selling Kane, we had multiple players who either wanted out (Eriksen) or who were attracting attention and we could have sold (Dier and Dele), all for a total of circa £160m. We ended up making £18m in total, and all of that was for Eriksen. Missing out on £142m isn't something we or any other club can afford. That was the problem.
He's definitely not a top 10 PL player but was great for us last season, even though I thought he started off poorly, but if we can get up, he should be good enough to keep us in that bottom 6
That was the upfront payment, the add-ons are set to take it to £100m+ via individual and team achievements, so Bayern not winning the league last season probably didn’t help. Same as Richarlison likely still having “only” cost us £50m so far as I doubt he or we have met the requirements to make the added £10m add-ons.
They blew 100m on Grealish, and then thought they would only have to pay 20m odd extra to get Kane ... ??
Not even about comparison. Citeh hacked their own leg off in front of the Levy shark when they spent all that money on Grealish, before they could guarantee Kane would do a Berbatoss. Still, can't complain too much (as it gave us the comedy gold of the summer of "waaagh" from Pep ) .
If that was his actual name, it would enable a supporters' song from a certain time to be resurrected.

Just read that he's a relative of Leeds' legends, Eddie and Frank Gray. Eddie Gray was a beautiful footballer. Such a talent in a team full of psychopaths, torturers and knuckle merchants. If his grand-nephew is anything like the same talent, we've got ourselves a complete bargain. Hopefully, he doesn't have the same propensity to get injured as Eddie.. ...which always came as a bit of a surprise, as he didn't get to play 2 games a season against Bremner, Giles, Jack Charlton, etc.
