If I was Adam Pearson thinking purely in the interests of Hull City and keeping sentiment out of it, I would back Barmby to the hilt, but on the other hand I would also have a replacement manager already lined up in case things go pear shaped.
NB will be the best long term prospect for the club if he can cut it and that's what we all want. However the January transfer window could decide our fate this year and if either City or Barmby decide his appointment hasn't worked a new manager must have some time to assess the team in order to choose his transfer targets. Hopefully the whole issue will prove academic if Barmby goes from strength to strength and gets his own players in January, but City should have a Plan B ready.

everyone is entitled to an opinion about NB as manager but I didn't expect to see a thread like this after 2 games... can we close this and you can open it up after coventry game? Even starting a thread like this inadvertently puts pressure on him, just like the ****ing media do... Can we just talk about how long he'll be in charge if we get 4 good results??! **** me.

The reason I posted the thread was so we could discuss the situation in a reasonable way before the knee-jerk pessimists descend if we lose tonight. I think if you read all of the posts there's hardly anyone not backing Barmby, but there are important things to consider that are worth talking about properly rather than being guided by the emotion of each result.

Yes I understand your sentiment but hasn't come out like that. It's done exactly the opposite imo.
I think it's good to be emotional. HE's exactly what we've been missing. Someone with a reason to care about, with passion for our club and you want to put those feelings away?
I just think you've opened a can of worms far too early. and this type of discussion will have the reverse effect.
But I know what you're saying and I'm not stopping anyone from sharing their opinions. I'm just a bit shocked.

If I remember correctly Nigel Pearson lost at home to two poor teams in his first few games............Scunny and Sheff Utd as well as a thumping at Donny and Millwall .Barmby 2 games and you want to form an opinion .............do me a favour.

I agree with Dem On, it's much too early to make a judgement on Nicky at this stage.

If you read all of my posts on this including the OP you will see that I want Barmby to succeed as much as anyone, but it is better if we have a sensible conversation about the situation now, instead of a 5lagging match after every result which would do more to undermine Barmby.

Don't see what's so unreasonable about this thread whatsoever? He's only asking how long everyone will remain patient for, what's wrong with that? I have a picture in my head of him being given alot of time and not doing well, then our Blunderside brigade jumping on his back and trying to force him out the club. Think this one needs handling much more carefully than any other appointment as Nicky is important to our club and has a bog part to play in our future whether as manager or not.

I see where you are coming from Craig ........But considering the team isn't ready or consistent enough to even contemplate promotion I would be quite happy for Nick to gain experience along with the team and would be content if we finished in the top ten with Nicky still in charge at the seasons conclusion.

We don't know how many games Papa Allam said constitutes a period where Barmby can prove himself as caretaker manager before any decision is made. BUT as he is talking of giving Barmby the transfer budget for the January window I would assume he will be given until the end of the season - as we need an Assistant to Barmby to ascertain what the coaching team/scouting team is like. Every manager in the history of the game from Sir Alex through Tango Man to Dario Gradi have made the odd mistake in substitutions, tactics and signings - let us not forget.

I think Barmby will be given more leeway by the vast majority of fans because of who he is compared to say if we had appointed someone else as caretaker.

I think that's where we differ dem_on. I still think we have a good chance of making the play-offs and from there its a lottery.
I'm not giving up on this season yet, because we have good players and a few good signings in Jan could be all we need. That's why Barmby's situation is important.

I'm not saying we can't make the play-offs and would be happy if we do .I'm saying even with a couple of signings in January we are not ready for the Premiership.Slowly slowly catchee monkey. We have too many players still on the books that have no future in a higher league .Dawson ,McShane,Kilbane,Oily,Basso,Simpson,Mclean,Adebola,Harper,Cullen, and others who are not first team regulars plus the loanees who are not likely to be here at the seasons end.We have gone through a turbulent transition and need, time, a settled squad, and club infra structure to make the step up again. Settling for a top ten finish doesn't constitute giving up on my team.

The ball is in Barmby's court, I think City want him 2 be the permanent manager! The caretaker title was mainly NB's idea to see if he could handle the job

I know you aren't giving up on the team, but in my experience there is never any alternative to aiming for the top. If we're satisfied with 10th place we'll probably end up in 15th then the momentum will be gone and our focus will turn downwards. If we end up in the Prem with a young inexperienced squad then the club will have to deal with that. I think we would both prefer the latter problem.

If we got promoted I wouldn't mind coming back down and investing in the training and youth facilities and a few additions to the team. Under this management (AP and Allams) the money will be spent wisely not wasted and can see them turning us into a bit of a yoyo club whilst we build a solid platform and then pushing for a permanent spot in the big league.

Newcastle ,West Brom and West Ham have all been relegated recently and held on to most of their experienced players ,they changed Managers but were lucky in their choice and played consistently in the lower division( West Ham yet to complete their year). We on the other hand have been in turmoil.I agree aim for the best position and let our efforts be rewarded ..................But we are still NOT READY..........4th-10th under Nicky is quite ok by me.

Don't think you can ever be ready for the step up to the premiership and the gap is getting bigger

We have a small squad and I've listed almost a full team that wouldn't hold down a place in any level of premiership team ,we need to be realistic and look over the top of the rose coloured specs. Getting quality players to come to Hull was proved difficult in the January of Tangoman's exceptional start .Youth ( if we can hang on to them) is the way forward but exposure and playing time is required for them to gel.I am looking forward with great expectations though next season.Lets hope the gap doesn't get too big too soon.

    Basso(probably new keeper anyway)
    Rosenior Chester Hobbs Dudgeon
    Stewart Koren ? ?
    ? ?

Those are the players I think could perform in the premier league, which would leave us looking for a proper tough CM, a left winger and 2 strikers which really aint too much. Throw in a couple cheap journeymen versatile players for backup and a good CB (gerrard?) and think we would have a squad capable of at least performing.
