I agree that this is the most likely reason. He shouldn't have been given a veto on those potential sales though, if the club was in such a perilous financial position.

You're a ****in idiot. Barnes is a numbers man. End of. An opportunity came up to buy a player at not big money who gives us numbers and is one or those players that makes two top players in a given position. This is the aim of the club. 2 top quality players in every position.
I’m ****ing astonished by how poorly this club is being run to be honest. All the pomp and promise from Staveley sounds as hollow as Ashley’s early lies. They know the ****ing rules, they have a simple guideline of what to do yet here we are with useless crap like ****ing Barnes having to sell major talent like Minteh. I genuinely thought we’d be better than this but what we’re staring at, offering out indispensable players like Gordon, is ****ing shambolic. I think Staveley needs to come out and explain why this is such a **** up. If the UCL shambles was to blame, ****ing get Howe gone. If this is all on Eales, get him out. Either way this is a really poor look for the club. Mismanagement, false promises, selling our best. All sounds very depressingly familiar.
