Twenty years ago (I cannot believe it is that long!) Colin Cameron's excellent book "The Valiant 500" appeared to celebrate Charlton's 70 years in the Football League. It described every player who had appeared for the first XI in a competitive match. So 500 players appeared in those 70 years. With our revolving door policy of recent decades (and to be fair the increased use of subs and loans) I reckon we will be up to 1000 within five years (that is, only 25 years for the second 500). The next edition will be a fat tome. On a different note. For whom is the no.24 shirt being reserved, 'cos we are up to no.39 already? My two guesses are: 1) CP is getting his boots out again having found he can walk on water. 2) David Beckham, who realises the Addicks are the only club he could join which wouldn't represent a step down from Man Utd.
Lovely ideas Eddie, but i dear that shirt is saved for Mr fortune. Or lack of fortune after the last few seasons!
Do you really think so? Looks a forlorn hope now that he can ever play at this level again. But I guess having told him the no.24 was being reserved for him it would be rather cruel and discouraging to assign it to someone else. Not like we are going to run out of numbers. So what number is assigned to Youga? On another note how was this for a bit of punditry as early as August 8th? Grovel to me all those who tipped Chesterfield, Bury, Colchester, Bournemouth, etc as possible threats to our play-off place. I somewhat underestimated Sheff Utd, and to be honest I feared Charlton might have to settle for third, though always hoping for automatic promotion, because we were a totally new team who would drop a few points while learning to play together. Although the win over Huddersfield was great, as was winning away at Sheffield, in some ways our first match at home to Bournemouth may prove to have been the most vital of the season. Had we started badly we could have struggled for quite a while. And Waggy's goal in that game is still the best I have seen.
Strange Eddie, i have just fished out a post i put up in the first week of September! Mine was completely wrong, but saying that I did say we would win the league the day we signed morrison!
