I replied before you updated your post, notwithstanding that, you said he played regularly for Chelsea, he didn't and only 3 games as fullback .... No coach is putting him in as a starter immediately. Is he better that Burn, I would say yes, in time, but not necessarily yet. Would I start him next season. Yes
The fact you haven't worked out our formation in the defensive phase of games and keep harping on about fullbacks despite this tactic being used for coming up 3 years tells us everything. If there was a crayon font I'd use it so forgive me. During our defensive phase both our full backs/wing backs whatever you want to call them, position themselves centrally as a 3rd centre back. They don't play as left back/right back. they leave that area of the pitch entirely and take up a position in the box. Joelinton normally does the engagement of the attacker on the left hand side and Longstaff on the right (hence why it's the weaker side) Burn takes up a position often near the left hand post and Trippier does the same on the right hand side. We occasionally mix it up by having the wingers engage whilst the cm's cover. It can be infuriating I know. but that's what we've been doing for years. As a result of Burn being stronger and better at heading and winning the ball in the box. He gets the nod over Hall. Tadah. This footballing lesson was brought to you today free of charge by the cult
You're now using mental gymnastics..you have Dan Burn as being better for the role....despite the fact we a saw what happened when Hall came in and he was moved to cb. I could dig out screenshots where you're describing burns position as left back if you like.
I personally rate Hall overall over Burn. But that’s because I think he’s developed well under how. Positionally he is weaker for sure. But Burn has gone backwards last season. As did Trippier. And the club have done well getting in Hall and Livermento who I think are both exceptional talents.
Probably yes..I do hope for something like that though...of course if Guimareas is sold we'll probably get it but who? I can't be the only person concerned with the links to Gallagher as his replacement... he's soo Newcastle.
offensively - that's when we're attacking. He hugs the wing and goes forward like a left wing back. I suppose if he was younger and with a better skill set he'd be looking for the overlap and whipping crosses in. This is what Lewis Hall is better at than Burn without a shaddow of a doubt. When we're in the defensive aspect. He will start off looking to intecept the long diagonal ball initially before retreating into our box to try and win the cross, intercept the pass or block the shot. This heavily relies on Gordon and (when fit) Joelinton to engage the attacker and hopefully win the ball before the danger comes. What we badly missed last year was Joelinton's ability to cut out the danger before it even got to that stage. Burn was left exposed as Anderson and Miley were nowhere near as effective at it as Joelinton. So as I've explained loads already. Burn is the better defender. Hall is the better attacker. Hall will improve and Burn will likely deteriorate. There is more than one skill set involved. Both have strengths, both have weaknesses. However in the grand scheme of things the issue last season was caused due to Anderson and Miley not pressing to the same levels as Joelinton does in my view. Hope this clarifies it.
Joelinton played plenty up front that doesn't mean he wasn't playing and doesn't mean he couldn't play better than Hendrick or longstaff in midfield... we can still assess a players abilities.
I never said otherwise because I'm judging the entire player amd deciding who's best for that position I've made a thread for clarity..... I'll go further and say Hall will be England's left back in a couple of years.
I don’t think anyone will meet his 100m release clause. And it expires on 30 June anyways. Gallagher isn’t a bad footballer mind. He’s better than Longstaff.
This is fair. To be honest I think you’re both right in most aspects. But accepting that they are really completely different styles and types of players. There is an argument to say that although Burn was caught out at LB with pace players. He also helped out in the air when we needed it in the box. That is something Hall will never be able to do. Hence the reason why chaos is suggesting Burn is better at CB now. Which I also agree with.
Which abilities - as an attacker or defender? Personally, I prefer a defender to be able to defend ahead of his ability to attack
He's a typically overrated player that plays for a big 6 club... it's this issue that sees England struggle.
See there’s competition for DCL from West Ham and Brentford. Good to see we’re mixing it with the best.
Both ! The full picture and I dont think he's that bad defending anyway...towards the end of last season he was excellent...made one or two errors because he brave... Newcastle were decent in the run in.
