The haves v the have nots ! <laugh>

I went out to West Harptree last weekend as my great grandmother is buried there and I tidied up the grave
Right opposite the church where she lies is Jacob Rees Moggs place
A very tidy pile it is too

    He’s one Tory that I can’t stand.
He comes across as really smarmy and condescending.
I accept he may not be like that in real life but that’s how he comes across.
I wonder if he might consider moving some of his accounts from the Cayman Islands to a local bank branch - to try and keep the branches open (don’t know if there IS a bank branch in Harptree now!!)

I nearly bought a place in West Harptree. The old doctors surgery - a big Victorian semi. Back in 1988 it was being sold by private auction. We were outbid - but just after we bought our place in Bishopsworth we were told the buyer had pulled out and our bid was the next in line.
We declined. Just as well - it needed loads of work doing to it.

He comes across as quite old fashioned but who really knows what any of these people are really like ?
West Harptree is a lovely place but it sounds like you had a good miss if it needed a lot of work

SO macron now gambling with a snap election .. for us July 4th [ independence day! ] is in the holiday zone !
macron is not at risk, but will be at odds if his party lose out to Penn ............

one has to think bigger picture! ...... he is [ Macron ] in power for a couple more years, if Penn's mob get in and screw it up he could serve another term!

looks like France and the UK are going to be screwed over for the next 4 /5 years!

MEP elections not fully absorbed the consequences yet but initially I thought hang on ... pundits are saying the major countries could need to increase their donations!!! . without getting anything back!!!!!

Let’s take you to Cyprus, where voters have elected a 24-year-old YouTube star, Fidias Panayiotou, as an independent to the European Parliament.
Famous for his pranks and comedy clips, “Fidias” - as he is known online - has 2.6 million followers on YouTube.
His most watched clips include a mission to hug 100 celebrities, pizza-eating contests, and dodging fares on Japnese bullet trains.
Even though he has no political experience - and calls himself "a professional mistake maker" - his campaign attracted large numbers of young voters.

is this the future, the "youth of the day " not taking life seriously? .... no political experience and no party to guide him!

even in UK & other parts of the world independents have some sort of political activity and an understanding of procedures!

Citizens of France, Germany, Sweden, Holland, Poland and more have had enough of freeloaders invading their countries
All are driven by lefty ideas of a utopia where everyone is of the same mindset and gets along with common goals
But as we know from bitter experience here, it’s the opposite

It will be interesting to see how many seats Reform win in the election. Polling suggests they’ll possibly have a decent % of votes, but only win half a dozen or so seats.

Due to the way our electoral system works they won’t win more than a small amount
They will have a greater percentage of the votes than the Lib Dem’s who will probably get about 60 seats
    Madness
Reform could yet overtake the Tories but it’s an empty stat unless they take over or morph with the Conservative Party which isn’t as daft as it sounds

THE MAJORITY THING is the key .... 326 is the key, however certain NI MP'S dont sit in Westminster! so the past the post is likely to be 322.
    2019 TO 2024 + / -
    Conservative ... 365 ... 346 ....

LABOUR has to gain 117 seats .... if they gain 117 from Tories THEN it would be 322 to 248 with SNP on 43 Lib Dems on 15 ! so no coalition could challenge them!

However Reform CURRENTLY 1 seat is the fly in the ointment ... if they managed to get 40 seats say 20 from Labour and 20 from Tories then Labour would be 302 Tories 228 and reform 40. so onus is on how many Tories lose to Labour!

REFORM PLUS TORIES NEED 290 [ or vice versa ] to be a strong opposition .. SNP with 40 plus seats are very anti Labour would mean Labour would need a coalition with Lib dems ! .. would that happen to stop Tories/ Reform!

it is going to be a fiasco in one way or another ..................

as for those that say Brexit was a bad move why do the 2 main parties state it is not an option, fine as it is! [ also reform is anti rejoining .. thats almost a half of people standing for election [ 4500 candidates in 2024 GE ]

Which is ironic as the Lib Dem’s have been harping on for years about PR, because the first past the post system hasn’t given them a proportioned number of seats to votes traditionally,

I think it’s because both main parties see it as divisive anmongst the public in general, also it’s one subject that on the whole doesn’t seem to fall within party lines.

I thought it was the Beeb you particularly disliked, I didn’t realise it was everyone who has the audacity to question your beloved Tories ;)

I’m not a flip flop mate, fully admit I’m Labour through and through, I’m fully transparent, unlike some I know;), I don’t pretend to be open minded whilst my actions are completely biased;),

seriously i do listen to all parties to see which most aligns to my views, I do see others have good points as well, but on balance Labour usually aligns with my views the most.

I did vote Libdem once, not sure which reincarnation it was though, may have been SDP, I can’t remember.

In the 1983 GE the Liberal/SDP alliance party polled more votes than Michael Foot’s Labour Party and still came 3rd.
As I said earlier in this thread, the electoral system is about the only thing that Labour and the Tories are in total agreement on.

the difficulty is how to apportion seats?
in some cases it is done off a list of who is first / second third etc??? so an area might not actually have an mp who is from that area? or the MP is from another party? how would it work!

Voters choose parties not candidates. The parties determine the order in which candidates appear on the list
