What a surprise! Premier League clubs have voted by 19-1 in favour of keeping video assistant referees (VAR) next season.
Surprised so many voted for it to stay. Obviously the so called big clubs want it to stay - turkeys don’t vote for Xmas - but thought it might have been closer.
Personally, I like the idea of VAR and most fast paced sports have it in some form. However, I think it definitely needs an upgrade. Furthermore, it should be used on an entire completion basis not like currently in cup competitions. If some of the games can't have it, then none of them should.
I’m just an old Luddite; I hate video technology- it takes that something that’s difficult to describe away from the sports that have it. Officials’ decisions should be respected whether they are incompetent or make mistakes. What was wrong with the centre forward or batsman getting the benefit of the doubt of offside and LBW respectively?
And there is the ridicule of someone being offside as they wear size 11 boots when size 9 would be onside. The adoption of such infinitesimal margins greatly devalues the game.
Nothing wrong with that at all Nin and I concur that VAR is overused especially when drawing those pesky lines to determine an offside decision. I think however you've partly answered your own criticism in that decisions are not respected by many. As I said earlier, it needs fine tuning but overall it's a good tool to deal with the cheating and whining that goes on. It's a bit of a Marmite subject I guess ,
You’re right there. I was watching Big Match Revisited the other day when the players from the early 80’s just got on with the game without histrionics outbursts aimed at the ref.
And to think, we thought drawing with Gibraltar with a massively inexperienced team was a tad embarrassing...... I have been told Iceland are good at delivering the goods though.
