Most people seem quite enthused by the possibility that it will be Still, Maric or Svensson. If it is none of those (which is obviously a big possibility) and is expected to be a more run of the mill appointment then I’d hope the club might have learnt their lesson from the Beale affair and would actively be doing their best to manage fans’ expectations.

I’m not saying that the club should pander to fans’ every whim and impatience but we all saw the impact that the Beale appointment had coming off the back of expectations of Still or Knutsen. I do think that could have been better managed so as to give Beale more of a fighting chance (to be clear I’m not defending the appointment, I think it was wrong).

Nor am I suggesting the club should be releasing statements, giving official updates or responding to every rumour. Just perhaps being more savvy and strategic in using friendly journalist to leak bits that are beneficial to do so and plant seeds. That may well be what’s happening with the Fishpaste three weeks article and Phil Smith saying that Still and Maric aren’t in the running, so I may be talking rubbish and fans just won’t listen/believe it regardless. Maybe the answer to that is to use the likes of Walker and journalists with a better reputation instead, mind I guess the better journalists don’t allow themselves to be used in this way.

I guess the other possibility is that the club don’t see Beale or an equivalent as a come down and genuinely were taken a back by the reaction in which case they wouldn’t be identifying that any expectation management is required in the first place.

Interesting stat in there regarding how few points they took off the poorest sides in the division and an admission from Svensson that they struggled due to being set up as a counter attacking side.

It’s something we struggled with even at our best under Mowbray, when teams came and were content to sit in against us we laboured in breaking them down.

I have similar concerns over Still as I’ve mentioned before on here as his record mirrors Svensson’s somewhat.

Equally you have to look at the resources they had at their disposal relative to the leagues they’re competing in, it may just be that they’re pragmatic in their approach and it can’t be discounted that they could dominate weaker teams given the means to do so.
