This is exactly what's wrong with our club right now. Instead of talking about how much of a great player he'll be, you talk about how much we'll make from him, selling him to a more ambitious club and then we'll continue to do the same with other players.

that’s not the point. The poster above said if he doesn’t go this summer it will be the next one. My point was if he does have to go, we will get more the next year.

this has absolutely nothing to do with the model

Ok my apologies, im just so frustrated with us right now and having a selling club mentality. Its not the way i want to see my club run, we as fans deserve better than that.

Its also the way football works but some folk dont understand that. All clubs are technically selling clubs except for the giant clubs like Real Madrid

If Rigg reaches his potential he will out grow us unfortunately- hes that talented!!!

Got nothing to do with any model. Weve had yrs n yrs of noone wanting our players and now we have a squad with some real talent in it that other clubs are extremely interested in

Which is great if the money is spent on taking the club to the next level, and not investing in our next windfall and signing more talented kids.
Im yet to see our outlook be any other way.

3 clubs in world football aren't selling clubs. Even they need to sell players to keep the books looking good. Every club that has spent in the championship this season has had a big player sale(s) in the last 2 years. Seriously what do you want us to do? Keep everyone and never add to the squad because you can't spend without making money?

Nobody is saying we should actively look to sell Rigg btw. Just highlighting the importance of him signing a pro deal. If he doesn’t sign one he goes very very cheaply.

Roy Keane would never have stood a chance if he took over now as manager. Far too many fans are happy with us being a mediocre cash cow, instead of aiming to play at the highest level possible like many other teams in the Championship that we are meant to try and compete with, with this current model.
Triantis, Mayenda, Rusyn and Hemir cost about 5m.
2 of them cant even get in the Hibs squad, one hates it here and cant speak a word of English and the other is one of the worst excuses of a player ive ever seen wear the shirt.?

What an amazing plan we have <applause>. 5m would have bought 1 top striker that woukd have played more than them lot combined.

I have a theory things might flip a little in the next 2 or 3 years. That is based on tfr fees not being so high. We have seen a recent trend of paying over years. I think we might see a tfr fee being worth 50% less than it was a year or two ago. A lot of that will be driven by European clubs unable to match prem fees, so a natural decline will happen. At that point clubs in the championship may well say the best way to make money is keep better players and get promoted. Of course players who agitate for a move will always get their way. But I can see something of a balance being available for clubs like ours where we may have to sell a Jack Clarke, but can hold onto a Dan Neil and Dan Ballard. The fees offered may not be better than the predicted likelihood of promotion with them in the side. Those 2 are examples of the type of player we have in the squad in 2/3 years team when this may be a reality.

I would like to think that at some point we can watch lads in our team for years and years. Nothing beats watching a local lad, turning it on. It is what football dreams are made of. So perhaps a balance of selling and retaining is the way it will be. If we end up selling every young talent it will be an excercise in futility in my opinion. Was golfing with a Derby fan today. We talked about this. They have about 5 players on a contract after this season gone. A couple are young lads from the academy who are worth a bit and could fund the squad shape for the championship. He is gutted to think it might happen, but accepts it might be needee. We both did say though having elite academies producing players has to be more than for future sales. Somewhere we need to dig out heels in and say no, we are building our team round him because the money wont help enough.

Bit of a ramble, but modern footy can be changed and will be I think.

Some players you know you can grow with, but it does seem like it's when rather than if, regarding Rigg leaving.

Here is my sense of it. Might be wrong. I dont think fans want to be a cash cow or mediocre. Some think it is about a rebuild from a dire 4 years in league one. I tend to think the state of things after that were desperate and we need to rebuild from the academy up. A lot of money went there.

I tend to agree about the players you give as an example. They dont look up to it at the minute and maybe never will be. Rusyn was the only one I could see the sense in signing but it has failed, so far. Where would we have been had we spent all the money on a striker, probably better off and maybe still with Mowbray in charge. Of course that assumes it was a striker worth £5m. But dont forget a £5m striker gets a big pay packet, and probably is out of our current wage bracket. Again we are building from a league 1 base. Hopefully this summer sees less of the Triantis and Mayendas, and more of the ready made players.

Not 1 single fan is happy to be a cash cow, every fan wants us to play at the highest level possible but loads will also understand its not as simple as just spend money and we'll get promoted

As a club we have spent so much money over the yrs on 'senior' pros who arent up to it. Last summer we def had a poor transfer window, that happens (the 2 previous summer windows almost took us to the PL)

Your last sentence is spot on, this summer we need more ready made players

Boro signed Latte Lathe for 4.5m mate, hes got 16 goals this season despite injuries and now has a host of teams after him.
Thats the difference between us right now and the smaller clubs around us

How is it the difference between us? They signed him and he did well, he scored 14 league goals at st gallen last season, Rusyn scored 13 in the league last season.

They didnt get promoted and will be playing championship football next season as well

Rusyn obviously wasnt as effective as Latte Lathe but we still tried to solve it. It was just a poor transfer window - which i have said 100s of times now

The model which you moan about all the time still took us out of L1 then took us to 6th last season - was just a poor recruitment in the summer set us back (along with the shocking Beale appointment and letting Dodds stay in charge)

We honestly arent far away mate, a good managerial appointment and a good summer window changes EVERYTHING

Rodgers cost 1.5m they sold him for 8m to his boyhood club, and Gibson their Chairman said any other club he'd have said no but how can he stand in the lads way of a dream move and make nearly 7m profit aswell all in 6 months? Whats your point?

I didnt realise until today Louie Sibleys contract is up this summer. I have a real soft spot for him as a footballer. One of a crop of young lads through the academy at the same time. I think he has a lot of talent, and has shown some but not all at Derby. He is a natural central midfielderz who has played a bit of a left sided role. I would be happy to see him come in and challenge for a spot tbh. Maybe an alternative to the £2m for Styles.
