Im not rubbishing anything mate, I’m making a point that different analysts will use different data to come to different conclusions. It’s not a set in stone process where there’s a clear rank based on certain things. You could argue touches and completed passes for a CB mean nothing to a team who don’t fanny around passing sideways in their own half most of the game. What one coach perceives as key metrics might not be the same as another. All in all with a scrape of all of those metrics including ones we think are important/unimportant I’m still at a lost cause as to how he’d be in the top 10.
You can be at a loss for it but he was ranked there and thats based on all defensive stats Teams will use the wyscout rankings as a starter but then filter to what they want in a cb. A leicester, Southampton type will look for how many completed short forward passes they make. A rotherham might look for how many interceptions n aerial duels won. All the teams will use it differently depending on their needs n how they want players to play in a system
How many games was this after? Because come the half way point of the season there was about 7/8 teams above us and similar amount of teams with less goals conceded. 4 of whom were head and shoulders above everyone
So logged on to wyscout to look at rankings Hes actually ranked 7th Looking at key defensive stats: Defensive duels won 68.5% Aerial duels won 54.3% (this is low for a CB) 4.2 interceptions a game 12 ball recoveries a game Picked Jake Cooper as a comparison, experienced championship CB who folk have said theyd love to have here: Defensive duels won 64.5% Aerial duels won 61.3% (thought would be higher due to the size of him) 5.08 interceptions a game 10 recoveries a game Cooper better in the air but o9 wins more tackles and recovers the ball more than Cooper O9 completes more passes and has a higher passing accurancy than him
Would be a crazy move and would turn himself into a back up keeper and slow down his development. I think he is one we could replace easy enoug and could understand the club cashing in if offer is high enough but would scratch me head at him going to sit in a bench!
I know a few might be interested where other players ranked: Patterson = 4th Ballard =5th O9 = 7th Hume = 3rd RB (4th overall fullback) Neil = 7th CM (dropped quite a lot over last couple of months) Clarke = 1st Jobe = 7th CF (this one is hard to judge as his CM stats, tackles, ball recoveries etc will nudge him up a lot)
Thanks for posting that mate. So he’s currently ranked 7th of all championship CB’s as of now? FbRef have him 35th percentile for aerials which seems very low but obviously depends on how many he actually has to deal with whereas as you say a Rotherham defender would obviously deal with more. Reason I’m so miffed is because we’ve been poor going forward this season and our defenders have had much more to do than they did last season so is that why they’re ranking higher?
Haven’t seen the game today nor any highlights just going off what I’ve read on here. But sounds like it was certainly one to miss. Understandable people are feeling low. Just hope the saying is true…..”It’s always darkest before the dawn”
09’s passing is class. Almost Italian-90’s -sweeper-esque. People say no to him in the cdm role but if he’s deep enough where the space is he would use the ball well and we’d concede less breakaway goals.
Potentially mate, but all the CBs ranked higher are ones at the top teams Ampadu Faes Vestergaard Rodon Ballard Harwood-bellis Are the CBs ranked ahead of him. He is low for aerial duels won but his defensive duels won is pretty good (ballards at 72% which is really impressive) which helps him Defensively wasnt a major issue for us this season, we conceded less than ipswich - so thatll help o9 n ballards rankings I was shocked Grieves wasnt ranked higher as i think hes one of the best in the league, he was 13th - shows that its only just a guide
Im still unconvinced by him in that CDM role, the game is very different there than it is at CB when in possession. Not saying he couldnt do it, not played there in ages but we need a real quality CDM. I almost think its the most important position on the pitch in the championship, someone who can break up play, protect the defence but whose capable of receiving the ball on the half turn and being able to play around corners - not sure o9 is that player (positionally i would worry, dont think hes great on the half turn and dont think he can play around the corner)
Yeah greaves and hoedt both been good, I’m surprised Burgess or Woolfenden isn’t up there. Given Ipswich concede a fair amount of goals but that’s because of how attacking they set up. Scored 40 more than us and only conceded 3 more, whilst conceding less than Southampton and THB is there.
Theres a few that are hard to judge, especially when they play multiple positions throughout the season. Jobes stats arent too bad tho, but thats when the eye test is vital as youll see the games bypassing him by then
