Evening binners, whats happening down the road ? Thought you guys had turned a corner this season, but looks like the season's a right off & its not even xmas yet !
I never thought Jewell was the man for you, better than Keane, not hard, but you need some one like Grady who has just left crewe, a tried & tested manager.
What ever happens now I cant see Jewell making the January sales? Shame really i had hoped we might meet up next year in the Prem.

for me we had two major moments in an otherwise mind numbing afternoon. A bizarre starting line up didnt help but
    1) Jewells at fault - putting on Bullard - it was a disasterous idea. Didnt help defensively, cost us in an attacking sense. If you do want to add Bullard then do it instead of MUrphy who cant play upfront (or at all in my opinion but thats another story) and was obviously shattered
    2) no matter how much you all want to blame Jewell, and there are reasons to, Edwards should be shot for THAT THROW IN. 30 seconds to go, you throw the ball into the middle of the pitch and behind our man leaving reading a perfect attack which they took with ease.
For those that will understandably be annoyed and fed up with Jewell will you also say Edwards should be sacked. His performance equally cost us today and no manager could have prevented that stupidity.
TBH Reading didnt do much and we are lucky for that. Wright had a few dodgy kicks but made some good saves. Cresswell done admirably again. JET is a lazy ****e. Leadbitter, Edwards, Murphy, Andrews were all abysmal. The centre backs didnt look comfortable. Carson wasnt his normal self- he appeared to play more centrally and we suffered and Chopra tried hard but wasnt overly effective.
    bad day all round

expanding on marsupials point, this was pretty much the line we'd all be calling for, to go from 2-1 down to 32 within minutes at the end of the game cant be completly the managers fault, yes he brought on bullard, but a player of his calibre should be able to help see the game out but at the same time not invite pressure because he has the ability to make an attack out of nothing.

the goals seem to come from crosses into the box which he brought Sonko in to deal with, its not really his fault he's injured, players with the talent we have, a theme thoughout this thread, i agree should be able to hold onto a game.

Also... i wonder what the odds are on a team losing 3-2 three games in a row. 2 of which his tactics have been working evidenced by the fact we were winning, we just cant defend.

2-1 up in the 90th minute, how about simply keeping possession for two or three minutes??

It really isn't that difficult, or at least, shouldn't be!

Any manager who has lost 5 consecutive games will be under pressure and rightly so! In our case we have also lost five consecutive games to teams who we should be beating if we are a top 10 team…. From this I can only conclude that we re not a top 10 team….

While I don’t like calling for the mangers head there is no excuse for this run of results, shipping 2 late goals in the last two games can only be due to a lack of confidence and this HAS to come form the manager. If we are going to change manager this season then now is the time to do it as then the new manager will have time to asses the squad and make changes in Jan. I do like PJ but as others have said it just hasn’t worked out for him, however who can we get in to replace him as I defiantly would not like another rockie manager like Keane or Jim….

I have to second Clapham’s comments – our squad is better than the performances. There doesn’t seem to be any confidence, belief, direction or backbone amongst the players. That must come from the leadership and coaching of the management team.

There are plenty of managers available but ME and his pals don’t have a great record here. I shudder to think who they might have lined up this time.

Now’s the time to get rid though. One clear month to the transfer window.

Ever since ME came in with his glorious money we seem to have been fighting amongst ourselves like ferrets in a sack! Has there ever been a more devisive chapter in the history of this football club? Hindsight is a wonderful thing but the old addage "Be careful what you wish for...." certainly springs to mind. We needed someone with deep pockets to come in and secure the long term financial future of the club and ME rode in on his charger and did the business. What has gone wrong and its blatantly obvious is that he has thrown the baby out with the bath water.

History has taught us that Ipswich Town and loads of cash do not go well together. The whole point of our wonderful club is that we always worked to a tight financial budget meaning that we nutured our youth team players and brought them in when they were ready. At the same time we picked up some amazing bargain players through our hugely effective scouting network and we always had a fine balance of youth and experience. We did not I repeat did not bring loan players by the bucket load. If you even go back to Burley's time how many loans did he bring into the club?

The sad truth is that ever since ME took over we have lost our hard won identity as being a well run family club and becoming just a souless division of a corporate empire. Jim Magilton certainly made mistakes but he was a young rookie manager but it proves my point in as much as before ME's arrival we had a team that cost bugger all money to put together, but played some decent football and we finished 9th the season before the takeover. When Magilton was suddenly given loads of cash to spend he went mad like a kid in the sweetshop. The decline set in from that very point as corners were cut and the whole fabric of the club was being destroyed. It seems that the mantra of working hard through developing youth and mantaining a scouting network have all been neglected because we suddenly have money and we could just buy our way to success.

Until the whole ethos of the club is changed back to the wonderful club we all grew up with and supported, the decline will continue. Too many loans, too many "Quick fixes" and not enough hard work, planning and vision. PJ is just a symptom of the problem nice guy that he is, he simply isn't up to the job. ME must soon realise that a root and branch change of direction is needed and I would implore him to speak with Sheepshanks and get advice on a new CEO. Derek Bowden did a fine job under difficult circumstances and would be a strong candidate to replace Clegg.

Just my thoughts and I take no pleasure in saying that Jewell must go.

Well im clearly not happy that we're 1 point of the drop zone. 18th, lovely ! Well done lads............

What I will say is football sure is a funny old game. Now the next point I will raise is going to cause ridicule amongst many, but what the hell, I'm going to stick to my guns.

Doing the maths we're 7 points off the play offs. Now, if we HADN'T ( its fine saying that as we HAVE ) conceded these 4 goals v Forest + Reading, we would be sitting 8th, 1 point off the play offs with a game in hand on sides above us. If that was the case, I think we'd be rather happy as a set of fans.

However, obviously we have conceded these late goals and we're shooting ourselves in the foot.

This has been happening for a good while these late goals, yes Spanish, it even happened under your sexual partner Roy Keane. Neither manager has sorted out this issue, which as far as I'm concerned has cost us point after point the last 3 or 4 seasons. I can't remember this happening too often under Magilton......

The main positive is Leadbitter is out for Burnley. Now, if Sonko is back, Bullard plays and we get 3 points, could Jewell POSSIBLY come to the conclusion Leadbitter is one of the main issues in the side!?

Now don't get me wrong 5 defeats from 5 is unacceptable. However, for now I for one will STILL be keeping faith with Jewell.

Yes he has done a few things, I'll list them here which I am unsure about.....
    - Gone down the loan market far too much
    - Gone about sorting out the CB's in a very poor way - however not as badly as Keane with signing Delaney ( he had McAuley already..... )
    - Carlos Edwards at right back
    - Constantly playing Leadbitter
    - Seeming to HAVE to keep with a system, stubbornly, similarly to Wenger
    - The public slating of players ( though at times I think it does these " precious " primadonnas some good myself ) Though I didn't like Martin's treatment after Pboro....
    - The dad's army approach - may have worked 10 years ago but the game is a lot more about pace now, its evolved ( a mix is whats needed )

I realise he isn't perfect. HOWEVER, I think he's a MUCH better fit than Mr Keane. Keane fitted Ipswich about as well as Ed Milliband fits the labour party - TERRIBLY. A family club shouldn't be treated to an Adolf Hitler or Joseph Stalin murder atmosphere.

I've also noticed after every defeat the most suicidal comments come out. By all means lets analyse defeats. However, surprise surprise if we win a game, many users boycott the forum, or certainly don't pass comment on it. Its much easier to moan and be negative than subjective and positive, but that doesn't surprise me as I live in England and its much the same at work.

At work its sunny all day, then a grey cloud emerges at 4.30...... NOT ONE of the clowns have bothered to say its a lovely day, however CUE anger and upset among the enitre office of 20 when a sodding cloud emerges.......never fails to make me laugh :)

Westlake I find it tasteless and offensive in the extreme quite frankly for you to compare Keane to Stalin or Hitler and shows utter disregard in trivialising the genocide and murderous acts that these dictators ordered during their regimes. I think you should moderate your language as you can not compare Keane to them.

    That is all

Some good points raised in the past posts by JWM and Westlake33, these are the kind of debates we should be having not just one's that say PJ's s***, the teams s***, ME is s***, Clegg is s*** and they should all leave!!!

I agree with basically everything you say JWM in your 2nd from last post. Its certainly a case of be careful what you wish for. I don't think of ME in a bad light and actually think he is one of the better benefactors as he doesn't interfere on the pitch. But there is no doubt mistakes have been made, mainly I think down to naivity more than anything, perhaps chucking money into the club as quickly as he did was wrong, it should have been done much slower, I think things may have been more harmoneous, as we probably had players who realised they were no longer going to be part of the club or they see other players coming in who were on much higher wages than they were. Then there was the appointment of Clegg and Keane in the same week, one who has never worked in football before and had to learn quickly and another who is absolutely clueless as a manager, is it any wonder we find ourselves in the situation we are in now?

I don't like the loan system and don't know why we've used it so much especially last season. I can understand slightly more this season because simply we just needed to get the players in and Jewell simply couldn't get the personel in all on permanent transfers who he wanted. Of course your right we need to get some bargains in, hopefully some more like Cresswell but I don't think Jewell had the time to build a team over the summer of bargain buys from lower leagues, he had to get experience and quality in and perhaps in some cases whoever he could!! He now is putting a scouting system in place and hopefully particularly next summer(if things don't carry on the way they are) we shall see some of these and with the personnel we currently have at the club it may be easier to attract players in the future. The one thing where his plan falls down is that he brought in experienced players which you would think would mean that we would have the experience to see out games and not have some of these bizarre results!!!

I think I felt we lost our identity the week, Clegg & Keane came in, I don't know if any of you remember but I posted an article on 606, saying "today is a dark day in our history", unfortunately I appeared to be right and I got a barrell load of abuse for it. I liked Jim and now it seems odd, although it didn't at the time and I could understand why he was sacked, we finished in 9th for goodnesss sake and we sacked him, just seems crazy now!!! I think we were actually in 5th when ME took over and finished 8th that season. I agree the decline of the club certainly started at that point but it was just completely exasabated by the arrival of Clegg and especially Keane!! At the point of Jim leaving I don't think the club was neccessarily going in a certain direction, if we appointed an experienced manager then, I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have gone down the route we have done. Moving on to Jewell I think he knows what needs to happen and I feel the club is moving back to the club that it once was, however he has made mistakes, particularly tactically. He perhaps has done a bit of a quick fix and some mixing and matching(although it isn't working atm) but I believe most managers would have had to go down the same route as he has so far, because we simply had little personnel at the club. Like I've said many times before this season was always going to be hard, it was always going to take a year or so to rectify the damage that has been done.

Indeed the last 2 games could have turned out alot different and we would not be here now having these conversations but at the same time, it appears Jewells subs have effected the game negatively, I particularly feel he got it completely wrong against Forrest but I can understand him bringing on Bullard yesterday, someone you would think who could keep the ball and sure up the midfield, but it clearly didn't work. One other thing is over the past 2 games all of the goals have basically come from crosses, there appears not to be any glaring mistakes, perhaps Sonko coming back should make a difference although certainly Collins and Ingi should be doing better. I think this season would be completely different if we would have managed to keep hold of McAuley, I think he would have been made captain and he would have been comfortable at the club and perhaps we wouldn't have needed to get in a whole new defence.

Westlake I agree with your list of things you are unsure about but at the same time I can see why he has done those atm:
    - Gone down the loan market far too much - As I've said before perhaps we needed these this season as he couldn't get the right players in quick enough
    - Gone about sorting out the CB's in a very poor way - Delaney was our main and only senior CB from the summer, put that with needing players in everyother position, i can see why he found it hard to get players in, with hindsight perhaps he should have focused on this area over others but then if he would have done that we may well be light in other areas
    - Carlos Edwards at right back- I actually prefer Edwards as a RB than as a RW, although he's certainly not the long term answer, again we needed to get players in in every position, when Jewell came to the club(unlike Keane) we didn't have a natural RB!!
    - Constantly playing Leadbitter- this is something I do not understand(although apparently he did actually have a better game yesterday)
    - Seeming to HAVE to keep with a system, stubbornly, similarly to Wenger-I would say although the system is not ideal the main reason it hasn't worked is because he's playing Bullard at DM, when he should be higher up the pitch and Andrews should be the DM to stop him doing all those stupid flicks he keeps doing, he's best when he keeps it simple, let Bullard do the creative stuff.
    - The public slating of players ( though at times I think it does these " precious " primadonnas some good myself ) Though I didn't like Martin's treatment after Pboro....
    - found this slightly strange, although I don't think unlike previous managers Jim and Keane that Jewell hold grudges which is key, players should be slated sometimes but aslong as he doesn't hold it against them and do it too often I don't have a problem with it.
    - The dad's army approach - may have worked 10 years ago but the game is a lot more about pace now, its evolved ( a mix is whats needed ) - not ideal but I think Jewell knows he needs to get some pace and youth into the side, if he's still here in the summer I think we will see this be added to the team

Clearly things aren't ideal atm and I don't think that the sun shines out of Jewell's backside, there are better managers out there but I think he is a good fit to the club and hopefully if the results change and he is given time, he will show that!!!

I agree with your comparison also Westlake, as a nation and as football fans we are certainly a very cynical bunch.

Apologies once again for the very long post!!

I think we all can agree that things can't go on the way things are or relegation will surely follow. Yes we can play the blame game and as it is coming up to panto season we can all point the finger at Keane and Jewell, Clegg and ME but the problems we face run deeper than personalities. We are crying out for some clear leadership and direction under pinned by a coherent plan, similar to the 5 year plan that Sheepshanks introduced in the mid 90s. The fact is we do not have an obvious plan only to use Clegg's words "We want premiership football at the earliest opportunity". That's not a plan but merely an aspiration and doesn't go in to how this will be achieved. Until we get an experienced CEO from a football background who can come in and reform our club from to bottom and restore the faith in our proud traditions we will continue on this road to decline.

That's funny - the other day when we won a game everyone else were convinced "we were Barcelona".

Is there a competition around here I don't know about for sanctimonious generalisations and selective hearing?

    Whats the answer Jonah?

Where do we go from here assuming that by this time next week we haven't picked up any points from the next 2 games?

Believe me I am firmly in the Clegg & Jewell OUT brigade!

Great post Westlake and some good debate on this thread.

I find that I'm arguing with myself as on one hand Jewell is limited by the players he has but on the other hand he had all summer to bring in the players needed. He did well to bring in the players he did but it very much has a feel of papering over the cracks until more permanent solutions (ie younger long term additions) can be brought in. For this reason I would argue it's better to keep with Jewell and allow him to bring in the players required in Jan or maybe even next summer rather than pass on the same problem to a new manager and wait for him to assess the market and bring in his own players, which will take considerable time.

I don't think it's a situation whereby we can bring in a new manager and he can transform us into a winning team just be instilling a bit of belief and confidence. Yesterday highlighted we are well short in several areas and any new manager would have the same problems with the added handicap of not having scouted for new additions.

    To summarise our downfalls yesterday:
    - Leadbitter - I lost count of how many times he blindly hit the ball over his shoulder to no one. He looked up for it on a few occasions but he was terrible in possession and didn't offer anything in terms of attack or defence.
    - JET - not a target man and not a winger! However the only other option available to Jewell was Martin and he can be a liability. Either play JET in the middle with ball to feet or don't play him.
    - Richard Wright - Still crap at coming for crosses and seems to run in slow motion :S
    - Ingimarsson - good defender but lacks pace
    - Edwards - lacks concentration, not ideal for a defender!
    - Jewell - Poor substitutions cost us again. Against Forest we brought on JET when winning and this time it's Bullard. I can see his thinking, Bullard can help us keep possession but at the same time he is a player who he has admitted 'gives him heart attacks', not really what we need when defending a lead and can't say I agree with taking Chopra off and leaving Murphy up front on his own. Would have been better to move Murphy to the left.

Despite all those negatives there were a few positives. I felt the formation was right and the partnership of Murphy and Chopra is one that could work well, Chopra seemed more involved and I think that was a result of Murphys ability to bring him into the game. Carson looked lively and has goals in him and Danny Collins was impressive, although I don't believe the will stay with us come Jan.

The negatives however far outweight the positives and I can only see more losses than wins in the near future until we can address the problems we have. A reliable winger and a central midfielder are essential, in the addition to Collins and Andrews.

And is now happening under your sexual partner Jewell, looks like we both have bad choices of sexual parteners!!

HOW MUCH LONGER CAN THIS GO ON?? PLEASE DON'T BE BLINDED BY THE FACT THAT YOU THINK JEWELL IS A NICE GUY, YOU WIN NOTHING BY BEING NICE!!

Svendust I think you sum up the situation perfectly and like you've as similar to what you've said I think Jewell has the potential to be a good manager for Ipswich atm we certainly aren't doing the business but by bringing someone else in, unless its a superb manager I don't think we'll be any better off. Jewell knows what he needs to do but these things don't happen over night. I did not expect however how bad some of the games were going to be with regard to the Peterborough game and the 5 game loosing streak and for any manager that isn't good enough.

Concerning JET, its obvious he's going to be an enigma and he's going to be the type of player who frustrates most of the time but then does something unbelievable. I don't think his position is a winger, he needs to be played as a striker or a bit deeper behind the striker but he is the kind of player who you need to just keep giving the ball as at some point something will come off!!!
