i can only speak from my own experiance tom , i have had sky for many yrs now and for me it has been a brilliant service , brilliant programmes , and brilliant definition from the sky equipment -

as for formula 1 not surviving because of sky -- it does not seem to affect the premier league football that sky also run --

Absolutely. Also, Hitler should have been given a Nobel Peace Prize.

Can't really blame him. Although it pisses me off when people try and say that this BBC/Sky thing is good for F1 fans.

    1. Haha, that's what they said when F1 Digital+ went live in 2002, that it would change the way we viewed Formula 1. And guess what happened?

    2. Of course, everybody has got the money to just throw about for HD haven't they? How silly of me to think otherwise.....

I've been following Formula 1 since 1992 but put simply, I don't have the money to 'budget' for Sky viewing. Football is the only sport that is 'surviving' on Sky, Cricket is in dire straits and thanks to Sky, the game in this country will probably be swallowed up should they (Sky) suddenly decide to pull out.

I am a former Sky customer, but left at the start of 2010. Put simply, the money they were demanding was ridiculous (£48 a month). I'm not going to simply change my mind at the drop of a hat.

    You're missing the point here.

Sky have snapped up what the BBC couldn't handle obviously [why don't they sell the commercial pap station Radio 1, close those parts of the World Service the Government won't pay for and shut down brain damaging yoof TV on BBC3 if they want to save money?].

The point is, although I subscribe to Sky Sports via cable TV, it appears I WON'T be invited to watch Sky's F1 coverage at any price as it's going to be stashed away on a "dedicated" channel.

This isn't about the number of people watching Sky, it's about trying to damage rival cable technology platforms, just like withdrawing access to Sky 1 on Freeview top-up a few years ago.

This is a matter of some national significance as re-cabling the country for TV could subsidise the vastly improved internet infrastructure we need - Sky will never do that.

I've just closed a Sky account and moved over to much cheaper cable broadband/phone/TV bundle due to a house move. They were absolutely paranoid on the phone that I was leaving because of the News of the World scandals and the Murdochs - which actually was no part of my decision.

With PL football coverage plateauing in maturity, restricted transmission of F1 is a weapon to defend themselves with, in part.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe a deal that makes more money for Ecclestone AND the Murdochs will be more popular than I think...........

Where's your patriotism gone, True Blue? I'm very disappointed to see you supporting the American-Australian Murdoch over "our boys" at the BBC and all the Great British F1 fans who can't or won't get Sky. "Proper men support their own tribe", as you say yourself.

I must say, I wondered the same thing! ;)

Perhaps we should remember that True Blue has declared his allegiance to our current Government, who ultimately pull BBC's strings?

How do you work that out? There's much more interest for cricket in this country than there was ten years ago. I'm not saying Sky is to thank for this, it's because we've had a good team for the last seven years. Attendances have dropped, but that's because of the amount of cricket being played and the struggling economy. The sub-continents thirst for one day cricket has driven up the amount of cricket being played, as well as Bangladesh being added as a test playing nation. I don't see how Sky is to blame for any problems, and to be honest, the game is as strong as its ever been.

If you're looking to get Sky, go to Quidco. You still get the £100 of M&S vouchers plus £135 cash back. I used to switch every year on the dot between my surname and my partners before we got married. I've currently got 5 HD boxes in various rooms as a result :)

Read some of the blogs on the BBC, especially the business ones. The Premier League clubs are destroying the Football League, bullying clubs with the money that Sky give them.

Sky will probably give better coverage. Of that I have little doubt.

However, the 'pro-Sky' posters on here seem to be missing the point somewhat. We are in a recession. Therefore, most people's incomes have decreased whilst outgoings have increased. This means people have less money to spend than they used to and therefore can't afford to pay for Sky. Add on top of that the fact that people don't want to give money to a corporation that illegally and immorally hacked into peoples phone lines, it doesn't take a lot of mulling over to realise why people aren't happy about this.

Yes, you should always be prepared to pay a little bit if you want high quality in any product. This is a fair comment when dealing with things that have always cost money - TV's, cars, furniture etc. However, when something that has been free for decades suddenly has a massive price tag slapped on it, what are people supposed to do? The sport has effectively turned on its fans.

Why? Because F1 is a technical sport based on continuous innovation of technology.
And Sky, by an absolute country mile, is the most innovative and technically advanced broadcaster. Sky, first to bring HD into peoples' homes. Sky ditto with 3D. Sky, first to use "red button" technology. Sky, first to have stupid amounts of cameras at every sporting event etc etc.
I can't wait for Sky coverage of F1 to start. They're dedicating a whole new channel to it. Thank you Sir Rupert and Sir James for bringing F1 out of the dark ages into the light.
