I don't understand the distinction you draw between "whole thread" and "a comment on a thread". By "whole thread", I presume you mean its opening comment?

Presumably you thought the comment in which you referred to Schumacher, Vettel and Germans in general, was acceptable? You expressed your opinion quite strongly as a reflection of nationality (and this is not just simple patriotism, it is nationalism).

Fair enough; you've stated your opinion (rather strongly - but nonetheless it is still your opinion), but it is totally at odds with the objections you've come up with in this thread, which more than border on being hypocritical.

    • Either such generalisations are acceptable or they are not.
But saying that one instance is unacceptable, simply because it doesn't agree with your own opinion, and that another is not, simply because it is someone else's expression of support which you would prefer not to see, is discriminatory in the extreme isn't it?

Why can you not see the bigger picture?

    How bizarre!

I supported Rydell over Cleland during their battle in 1995.

Think it was the sheer cheek for Volvo to race an Estate the year before that made me give them due respect! That and the sound of those 5 cylinder engines were really pleasant next to the 4-pot motors that were the norm.

Maybe he is, but here he has written nothing wrong.

If users have a personal agenda with him then that is different again. I have seen some of what he has written before and think it does border on what is acceptable so chose not to comment as didn;t wish to be associated with those threads, but here I think his statement was perfectly reasonable and has either been completely or deliberately misinterpreted by those with an agenda.

Hypocrite is a strong word and one I was avoiding, for now.

I can also put that label on other users on this forum who seem to not care about what they have written before if it completely contradicts thier current stance or viewpoint. Apparently it's either done in a different context, or not relevant!

That is unfortunate and should not prevent you from making which threads you choose. You just have to accept that people will disagree with you, it is not necessarily abuse, but also your own reaction on their viewpoint can influence on how that thread may evolve.

I think you nailed it right there.

There was a group of us that used to go watch the BTCC when we could... And boy did we laugh when the 850 Estate was announced, but by mid way through the season we were massive fans. Watching them muscle their way through the field was a sight to behold. It was always a laugh to go to the paddock to see how much gaffer tape would be holding them together for the second race. The golden era of BTCC for me. They should never have gone to the saloon. :)

I used the racist comment, but i used in reference to the poster, not the article. I remember him from 606, and he was a right wing nutjob, who couldn't appreciate the talents of any foreigner. I'm patriotic, i'm proud to be British, proud to be a Welshman, but despite this, i don't automatically support the brit involved in a specific sport, i support the person i like. I support Arsenal, not because they're a british team, but because growing up, i got to witness the sublime talent of Dennis Bergkamp, a dutchman. And i lost family members in WW2, but i like the germans. Germans in the war were brainwashed by a psycho austrian, doesn't make them all bad, it makes them easy to manipulate.

    I agree about the Volvos.

That team generated enormous enthusiasm and support; not just for the Volvo team itself but the whole BTCC scene. Everyone benefited and it was a lot of fun.

When you're a 7 year old kid (as i was in 1998), you pick the car who's livery you liked the most.

Good times... good times! Great racing, great cars and some great personalities. The BTCC was fantastic in those days. If I remember, a paddock pass cost about 5 quid, and you could easily go chit chat to drivers. I wish F1 could be like that.

    I have 1992 - 1995 season reviews on VHS.

Still worth a watch on the one remaining player that still works! Really need to get those onto DVD.

I thought you were joking about them entering an estate! I remember Rickard Rydell at the wheel of an S40, doing battle with the Renaults of Menu and Plato.

Oh no, it was for real :)

Mainly a marketing stunt to start off with in 1994, as they then went to the better areodynamics of a saloon when the cars were all allowed to have wings and splitters from 1995.

Not at all. :) I used to have an 850 T5... I'm now almost crying, I miss it so much. I think I'm going to ebay to find me an 850R. :)

    I don't think that one's a real 850R... Looks like a T5 made out to be an R.
