Seems to have done well over there. Won the league last year on a tiny budget in comparison to psv and Ajax. Up there again this year and won the cup earlier in the season.

Worry is it’s another ETH and his record in Europe isn’t great - 3rd in CL group behind Atletico and Lazio and knocked out v Roma in europa. Albeit prob say 3rd is about right in that group

we can't judge on Dutch league.

would you say looking at that group and the game results that his team out performed expectations? I've no idea yet.

then roma is a big team to have to play too.

the issue here is we cannot compare to klopp as klopp got to a cl final and was a massive buzz so was getting much love and being fawned all over by the media upon arrival.

this is a massive step up in pressure and expectation.

will he bring dirk kuyt in with him for example? who are the coaches going to be.

do they have a clue about the fitness levels required or pressure?

    who knows.

    cl group

beat celtic at home (so what I hear everyone say)
lost 3-2 away to atletico. lead 2-1 though.
    beat lazio at home 3-1
    lost away to lazio 0-1
lost at home to atletico 1-3
lost away to celtic 1-2 (not good, conceded late)

europa was 2. 1-1 draws and then lost on pens to roma. thsts not too bad.

the prior season they won their title but who cares?

they won their europa group v lazio, sturm graz and that **** Danish side utd hate.

it was however a bad group where a 2-2-2 record won it so lazio under performed

thry beat shaktar donsek in the last 32 so God only knows what went on. thry won 7-1 at home.

they met roma.again in qf then and lost away after extra time (4-1 aet)

this really doesn't tell us that much but the record doesn't show much defensive nous but a lot of attacking pressing etc.

Bit of a contradiction there mate. You're saying don't judge him but writing off the league he operates in.

It may well be a weaker league but the team he managed and the teams he managed against are all part of that league and in the same position.

If he took over a club like Liverpool but competed in a the Dutch league still then I'd get your point (obviously, this is impossible, just an example)

Feyenoord aren't the best team in the league either (Ajax and PSV are much bigger) but he still won the title so he's entitled to some credit.

I don't know anything about him so I'm not going say much else, just felt it was harsh to ignore what he's done in that league because it's considered a poorer standard

there's a gulf in level between these leagues so we can't go off thr basis thst he's won it nor that it's just the Dutch league (see comments around ten haag and a lot of Internet waffle)

that's why I said have a look about the European record and see if they've punched above their weight

let's see what type of person he is.

let's see what coaches come in too.

There is a "gulf in level" as you say but the the quality of the club being managed is also lower #perspective

I'd prefer to wait and see if he's actually appointed. If that's the case, I'll wait and see how it turns out.

If he does become manager he will have a bigger mountain to climb with the pressure of coming after Klopp and the added presure of not being in most fans top 3 picks for a new manager. Just hope Edwards knows what he is doing.

Put it this way I’d rather a manager that won the Dutch league & cup with a lesser fancied team than a manager that didn’t win the Dutch league & cup with the same team.

    nah salah is past it.
I'd trade you Palmer for Klopp though.
But even he might not be able to sort out our squad of douchebags

We don't actually know that we did make an offer for Amorim. All we have is speculation that we made a bid and he turned us down financially.

We might never have even been interested in him.

He's still banging them in and providing lots of assists. He's not past it, although one does have to wonder how long he can remain valuable.

I'm not even going to pretend to know if Slot is good enough or not. I don't know. He seems a similar kind-of-manager as Klopp but less known than Alonso.

I'll just wait and see how he does before I judge him too much.

People may have been wanting Alonso, but I suspect he will be greeted warmly by the fans despite some being disappointed. The transition is coming at a good time he's ideally joining a club with lots of great talent waiting on the bench to reach age and be starts with a team that is already jelled that plays similar tactics to those he uses, and already close to title-ready.

If he's good, I don't expect it should take him over 6 months to get going properly. That said, not being a big name (4 letters isn't very big) will probably ease some of the pressure. I feel like Alonso (50% more letters) would have been under more pressure to hit the ground running, perhaps unfairly.

He's past his best - but he still has enough goal involvements to be deemed a top player if it weren't for the comparison to how he was a few years back. As for his value, it must have gone down recently, but as I've often said I have little interest in the money side of management - as long as were not in the mire I don't think about it.

I've said before I'd be happier with a manager I knew nothing about over any of the high-profile ones we've been linked with. I'd have been excited over Alonso joining, but a lot of that would have sentimentality over a great ex-player returning - he still needs to prove he's more than a flash in the pan, and has probably made the correct decision to stay with Leverkusen.
I can't see Slot as a step down from Amorim because I knew nothing of either until we were linked.

As I pointed out earlier when Amorim was the expected manager... I've no idea how good he is, although he must be good to win a title... But the main thing that got people excited about him was winning Sporting first title in (was it 17 years?). An accomplishment to be sure... But Sporting hasn't really been far off. Most of those 17 years they finished 2nd or occasionally 3rd... So it's not like pulling a nobody off the ground... All the other managers had come pretty close too. Amorim just had a little more talent, or a little more luck than his predecessors, I don't know which...

And he followed his first title up with 4th place one of their worst finishes in recent seasons... Maybe luck balancing out... I don't know.

Take with a pinch of salt but Melissa Reddy said that when asked about Amorim Liverpool were always quoted as saying he’s one of the candidates under consideration compared to when asked about slott was much more concrete interest it seems.
