I think it fair to assume that he hasn’t got anything else in his locker at this point. Young, still learning and slowly working his way through man city’s back catalogue of games.
I think hes been pretty average overall, not great, not an outright failure. We were the worst side in the PL last season and we are the worst of the sides relegated from last season, but we are still in a breakaway top 4. That being said I don't think we've particularly been better for playing this style of football, we could have made it into this position playing any old way, its cost us as much as its gained.
Trouble is, will be able to turn it up again for the playoffs. That’s my worry if we wander through the remaining games.
Even on the few occasions we have found space on the flanks you look inside to see who is taking up space in front of their back line and the answer is no one. Just a huge ducking gap. Rothwell was just running the same track up and down and not drifting across to the left to give us an overload. Smallbone has already done more than him, since coming on.
Too often We don’t have a front three under RM we have a wide 2 on the left and right and Adams in the middle. With nobody pushing up in support.
Not any like-for-like options, for sure. But Martin is one of those managers - a bit like Arteta - who when they need a goal, just sacrifices his midfield in favour of more and more attackers. It rarely works.
I think he is more guilty of playing unbalanced midfields (the lack of DMs etc) far more than playing players out of position. I am aware there is the full back issue from a few games ago, but I still think his hand was forced a bit back then
