Someone, and several more, like Diaz would argue that VAR is not black and white more like grey, others would argue it's **** and needs ditching. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
The issue they’ve landed themselves with is that they’ve instructed assistants to keep their flags down and let the game flow, even if they judge it to be offside, so to everyone else the judgement on the field is unclear. In yesterdays case I can’t imagine that the assistant would have flagged offside for such a tight call so it really should have been given as a goal however it is viewed. VAR is an utter mess. It probably is workable, in limited circumstances, but what they have right now is a car crash.
Car crash? It ensured correct decisions. Linesmen surely should raise their flag when it's clearly offside and they're certain. The ref could ignore it if he too isn't certain. Not stopping right away for obvious off sides is plain daft.
No I'm not at all! I'm 'railing' against your comment that it's a "car crash". It isn't. Whether we like it or not, it results in the correct decision being made. I'm then adding an opinion on a different, albeit linked aspect, being that having linesmen flagging right away for obvious / certain off side would be an improvement imo.
In the VAR still photo the linesman is in the right place to see and isn't waving his flag, he didn't think it was offside. VAR is supposed to correct clear and obvious errors by the officials, I would say the linesman didn't make a clear and obvious error so the goal should stand.
But, from the Premier league site. VAR is used only for "clear and obvious errors" or "serious missed incidents" in four match-changing situations: goals; penalty decisions; direct red-card incidents; and mistaken identity. But factual decisions such as offsides, and the issue of whether a player is inside or outside the penalty area, are not subject to the "clear and obvious" test.
Can you be 100% sure about that? I don't think so. Out of interest what do you think of 'umpires call' decisions in cricket?
Boro 59% possession, more shots and more corners. May as well stop the game now and give them the 3 points. Only fair thing to do.
