Quite funny that the Man City hung into the ball during the shootout when it was Bernardo waiting to take a penalty
To be fair to Bernardo, any time someone takes one of those penalties down the middle they're going to look a proper tit if the goalie just stands there.
Am I the only one who thought he just tried to chip it down the middle Nothing to do with fans etc I thought he tried to do the thing down the centre and that was all
Keeper read it like a book, fair play to him. Don’t really care about fixtures etc, I’d rather they were out
the funny thing is that ederson actually guessed right. the stance he had was awful. he looked flat footed and spread like a 2 dollar ahem... well let's just say he was never doing anything from there but guessing early. a couple real pens were just rolled in after he hopped to his knees the wrong direction he looked like we had a pattern of dives rather than looking at anything. his record is really poor on pens. After that thier keeper read a couple and thats what made the difference. city misses were poor and the pen takers were madness.
Often think that guessing not to dive either way often gives the chance of a save. Inside the side netting is the only guarantee of scoring. Citeh got done!
No idea if the fans put him off or not, it's just amusing that his own fans did that too him. Can't be a good thing proper to a penalty can it? But generally agree with @saintKlopp, if the keeper dives then Bernardo's penalty looks great, not often a keeper stand still nowadays
I never missed a penalty with this approach, not even in training. Hit the side netting, score every time.
Makes me laugh bitterly when people talk about real being outplayed, because Ancelotti purposely sets them up to sit back and utilise their pace, as he has done numerous times against us. Sure City had chances that could've changed the game if scored, but there's elements of risk to every style of play, as City found out yesterday
I didn't see the whole game, but from what I did see I'd say they were outplayed. Surely no team of their stature plays for penalties? They would have wanted to win that game in normal time, but they weren't allowed to. Ultimately their play won them the game, but penalties are a lottery and not a viable game plan.
I am sure you said the same when Chelsea sat back against Bayern in the 2012 final and tried to play on the counter and rode their luck immesurably.
Ok, I've thought about this and I think I see your point, that although possession stats might say they were outplayed, that was the way they chose to conduct their game? In that sense I agree. But yes, definitely high risk and it's still fortunate to get away with it on pens.
It's a different story though when a manager has a competitive win ratio against another using those tactics. One win might be lucky, multiple wins suggest a common theme.
We played the same in the semi that year against Barca, somewhat out of necessity when we went down to ten men after John Terry decided to do a WWE flying knee drop on Alexis Sanchez. We absorbed all their pressure and Fernando Torres hit them on the counter....the best contribution he made for us during his tenure in blue!
