you have totally missed the point…a normal car is not promoting itself as environmental hero, a better alternative for the planet like electric cars position themselves….which is bullshit…it’s marketing…it’s no better for the planet…where do the electricity come from? Minerals for the battery etc etc etc

    Apologies if already posted….

    defo the GREEN choice

"The stupidity of the human being!
    Here comes the Tesla battery.
To produce it you need to excavate:
12 tons. of rock for Lithium
    5 tons. of cobalt minerals
3 t. of mineral for nickel
12 tons. the mineral for the copper
Need to move 250 tons. of ground to obtain:
    12 kg of Lithium
    13.6 pounds of nickels
    22 kg of manganese
    6.8 kg of Cobalt
    100 Kg of Rams
200 kg of aluminum, steel and plastic.
The Caterpillar 994A used to move this earth consumes 1000 litres of diesel in 12 hours.
Here is the “zero emissions” car.
The biggest scam in history. "

Siminlar in a way to the Covid resistance fighters. Didn't want to be personally inconvenienced by things like masks, lockdowns, vaccinations etc. Didn't want to sound like a complete sociopath, so desperately searched further reaches of the internet to find bogus research to justify their positions. Big overlap with climate change deniers. I wouldn't mind betting there's some chemtrail evangelists on here as well.

The car supposedly gives off zero emissions when it drives. This is what the claim relates to

No car will ever be 'green' because of the materials needed to make it.

Of course there is an environmental impact of mining for metals (as there is for the precious metal such as platinum used in a 'normal' car), although I'm not sure a wheel loader is driven for 12 hours to produce lithium for one Tesla battery.

But i'd hazard a guess that a lithium mine and the production of a battery is less harmful overall than building a quarter of a million tonne steel structure, floating it out to sea, deep sea boreing and pumping out oil for three decades, which is then used in engines polluting local environments even more.

Electricity production can be renewable and is increasingly so. Fossil fuel will never be (well, is over a geological timescale).

The lithium ion batteries also use fluorine to make the mobile lithium ion. It's toxic as ****. If (or when) the batteries catch fire, good luck in putting the fire out.

You are correct, in the same way as Shell.
Bill arrives, our electricity is all sourced from renewable blah blah
An email arrives. Due to the increased cost of fuel, your electricity price is increasing.
    Eh? What?

Does that actually happen though? Are there pages and pages of posts on here saying how great EVs are? If you look through this thread, the majority of it is people taking it in turns to say how uninterested in EVs they are, and listing more and more justifications. The nearest thing to EV evangelism on here is a few people saying, actually some of those justifications you've listed are nonsense if you think about it.

It's another one of these conspiracy things, where middle-aged men particularly get themselves convinced that there's this aggressive campaign to force something on them, that doesn't really exist (EVs, pronouns, lockdowns, women's football, migrants, take your pick), and then put out way more noise in opposition to that thing than there ever actually was in support of it.

I mean, you have a lithium ion battery in the phone or laptop you're typing on... If the fluorine or a fire is a concern, then you shouldn't be using them.

You really don't handle people having different views to you well do you...

I have an EV by the way ( well sorted of, it's a hybrid ) and it's the most inefficient car I've ever driven ( bar my silly cars which is expected), it averages approx 30mpg when the diesel version of the car I had before this ( exact same car just one diesel and one petrol hybrid ) averaged approx 55mpg. This version also goes through tyres much quicker, brakes much quicker and no doubt other bits I've not come across yet, which I'm guessing is down to how heavy it is..... Such a green alternative

I'm assuming your hybrid is an older model, HT - all electric and most new hybrids use regen braking mainly, which is 'motor' based, so the brakes are used a lot less and so last longer - don't usually have to change Tesla brake pads as so rarely used - in fact encouraged to use them after every service to prevent corrosion building up.

They do wear out tyres marginally faster - I think it's the higher torque.

Get rid of it then. No one will care. Others will still buy and use them and they'll continue to grow in popularity while angry men continue to pointlessly complain about them online.
