What could possibly go wrong?!? -> But if worries about vandalism or theft are the issues that stop an advancement in tech and society, then the crimes should be resolved, rather than future halted/suspended. Agree. Should. Meanwhile back in the real world (or at least Broken Britain) ....
We built a garage with access from the front but I fill it with storage for my business We dont have enough room at the front of our house for a driveway for a car to sit outside At the back garden we included a parking space for our car and it's protected by a high wall and gate If we had an electric car we could charge it overnight in relative safety I see EVs on the road with wires leading from charging point to car and I'd be worried about vandalism
"Using data supplied, we were able to estimate that, in 2022, metal theft cost the United Kingdom a staggering £480 million. During the same year, we heard that commuters suffered 72,000 minutes of delay because railway signalling or overhead cables, containing high-value copper, had been stolen" UK only "The estimated loss due to cable theft in India is between $1.3 billion and $1.9 billion per year." The estimated loss due to cable theft in the United States is between $1.5 billion and $2 billion per year. The estimated loss due to cable theft in Brazil is between $120 million and $240 million per year. And your suggestion to resolve, stop, prevent, even minimise this global phenomena, is?
I wasnt suggesting not owning a car to avoid vandalism My suggestion was to see how you could minimise vandalism by taking sensible precautions
New rules and regulations were brought in regarding scrap yards and metal recycling. No cash, name and address of seller confirmed with ID. To report anything suspicious, like copper wire and church roof lead. Obviously law need to be enforced.
I have just been watching a TV program in which a guy in USA was getting married and needed money for the wedding so he went round to his neighbour and shot him to steal his money. He also sent a message using his neighbour's phone to the neighbour's girlfriend and lured her to the address. When she arrived he killed her, too. He was sentenced to death. So far so good. Next thing that happened was the state started an "initiative" in which all death row criminals had their sentences reduced to life in jail!
How many smartphones are stolen globally? Do you refuse to own one because of the risk? I had a diesel Isuzu D-max pick-up stolen about 15 years ago, it travelled via Bulgaria to Syria and ended up being used by ISIS (true story) - it didn't put me off buying a car...
It is fascinating how many pretty flimsy reasons people come up with to be anti-electric car. This thread is full of it. It totally comes down to whether you want to be for or against them. If you want to be against them, you can pretend every little thing is a huge problem. Meanwhile, plenty of people seem to own them and get along just fine. It'd be better for people to just accept that they don't like modernisation and change happening around them, and stop trying to find new justifications for it. Perhaps the same applies to a lot of topics.
or better to accept that electric are not a better alternative in terms of the environment - if that is their entire purpose???
You mean just like people who are for them won't have anything said against them and will cling on to whatever they can to try and justify that they are the "future" ..... Silly comments like that work both ways
It is not the little thing that is the problem. It is the big thing. Charging the battery. How many houses do you know of with a three phase supply? Necessary for rapid chargers. Yes, a leisurely overnight charge will suffice for the supermarket run. And will get you a fair distance. You arrive at your destination and then start planning the return journey. I was witness to such. Operation Overlord was a piece of piss by comparison. One day maybe, one day, I may consider an EV. Just not today.
I wouldn't say that any personal car is good for the environment and probably never will be, certainly not in comparison to public transport. But the information at hand shows that local air and noise pollution is less - city centres will benefit and save money on treating asthma and various diseases caused by NO2. As renewables develop and electricity production advances, it will become more sustainable and far cleaner than fossil fuels. My personal belief is that as batteries develop, electric is the future - the investment in diesel and petrol as moving forward, has dried up right now. The arguments against can all be countered - battery leasing resolves charging problems, but the majority can charge if necessary. Long journeys and heavy transport will be a problem, but the next generations of battery will resolve this. Of course, there's periods of flat-lining in sales and tech moves forwards, but these problems are what helps companies find new solutions. It's like when mobiles came in the nineties, but landlines continued until the late 2000s as some resisted.. but efficiency, convenience and coverage eventually won over. I completely accept that they're not good for all, right now and maybe for the next decade... But it's happening ;
One thing that is a fact though The pollution from car exhausts causes a lot of health problems And it wont be a bad thing to see them go
