R&W Seems strange to think about Mendip pubs from over here but mate, take it from me.......there is only 1 pub on the Mendips.....The Hunters Lodge. Brilliant and unique in equal measure.
If you mean the Hunters Rest in Clutton RP I knew it VERY well. I used to take aspiring young Mrs R&Ws there - including the one that was successful. The landlord of the Dundry Inn owned it for a while - it had a railway in the garden and a miniature pony I seem to remember! A great pub.
HLI .. present family been in charge since year dot ...still got shove halfpenny on table in window seat .. must be over 100 years old! started drinking there about mid to late 60's!
The foot and mouth disease of the year 2000 meant usual caving activites were cancelled, however someone noticed that during a heavy down pour the water from the carpark disapeared down a hole at the end of the pub a very small hole to boot! had gone un noticed for a few hundred years!!! it is now a very sporting and deep cave ....under the pub. Barrels are still lined up behind the bar .. phones are still banned .. original Lias floor in bar .... and fire gets lit on FIRST of October and ceases on 1st of May ... gents havent changed a lot regarding lack of pipe work!
Havent been there for years, although back in the day is was very popular. No, I was referring to the Hunters Lodge , Priddy.
How Sammie Szmodics proved to be the right player at the wrong time for Bristol City Sammie Szmodics returns to Ashton Gate with Blackburn Rovers as the leading goalscorer in the Championship, a far cry from the frustrated figure who made just three league appearances for the Robins in 2019/20 https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/how-sammie-szmodics-proved-right-9214885
It also had a model Scotsman in a kilt in the Ladies toilets, and every time the kilt was lifted to see what was underneath a horn would go off in the bar Went there for lunch about 6 months ago after a break of 20 plus years. Food was fantastic
Ah yes, I remember the Scotsman at the Hunters Rest although in my day it was a bell that rang in the bar.
I remember that too - the red faces of the ladies coming out of the toilet after the bell had rang!!!
Getting confused now. Think that was a different pub but can’t remember the name. Certainly there was a pub with coins glued to the bar. The bar was highly polished copper I think. This will stay with me now until I remember. If I do I will get back to you!
Bad Memory Time ~ Swansea City 7-1 Bristol City Tinnion pays price for woeful display BRIAN TINNION last night stepped down from his position as manager of Bristol City. https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/tinnion-pays-price-woeful-display-2377007
This result was the ONLY time I ever remember being PLEASED with a defeat. It meant Tinnion HAD to go and we could finally get our recovery started
I'm pretty certain it was at the Hunters Rest, unless it's one of the other pubs around there such as the Pony & Trap, Carpenters Arms, or the Ring O'Bells maybe ?
