Just had a look on transfermarkt to see which u21s are out of contract. Caden Kelly Ellis Taylor Michael Spellman Connor Pye Henry Fieldson Harrison Jones Callum Wilson Harry Gardiner Tom Chiabi These seem to be the prominent names that are out of contract, are we expecting any of these to be renewed?
Not seen enough of wilson to comment on him but out of the other ones fieldson should get an contract other (still really young and got something about him) I like kelly n Jones but not convinced theyll make it at championship level. Potential offer 1 yr deals and send on loan - same applies to pye
Gardiner is interesting, scored goals at Blyth but he'll be 21 in September and he really needs to be playing league 2 football at minimum next season if he is ever going to make it here. Taylor, Spellman, Pye and Chiabi i'd be fine with leaving from what i've seen.
I’d say Harrison Jones is nailed on for another year. Caden Kelly and Fieldson have some kind of realistic chance of getting another year. The rest seem unlikely either due to age or circumstance imo.
The players coming through the u18s is the biggest one for me. No point keeping someone like Pye when Oli Bainbridge is very good (if we can keep him)
Yep. Circumstance meaning they're either not where the need to be in terms of development, or just that there’s a better option (or simply more options) coming up behind them. Harrison Bond the keeper we had who was released last summer, highly regarded by some of the coaching staff but we had too much competition for him at the club.
Gardner, Harrison and Kelly for me, two year contracts and send then send them out on loan, all three have real potential and so we need to encourage them as much as possible to fulfil it,
Yes i would agree. 'Proper' number 9s aren't coming through. Maybe Gardiner is the closest but not ready for first team yet imo. Got good potential though.
I just said it on the new head coach thread that I think the pure number 9 as a player is dying out. Even some elite clubs are playing without them these days.
I don't think they are coached that way tbh, not in the no9 position anyway. Seems to be a dying breed tbh.
I cant see gardiner playing above L2 at the most - wont be surprised if he spends most his career between conference n conference north/south
