Yeah, I think I read that out of all regular Championship keepers this season, he currently has the worst xG and the second worst save percentage. It's one of things though that doesn't require stats. We can see with our eyes how poor he is at shot stopping.
It does seem that clubs these days with all these xG and 'potential' stats seem to like to use them when they point to a positive outcome, when the same system points out you have the worst-performing goalkeeper in the league they are ignored. I used to play in goal (obviously not to any standard at all) but the thing I have noticed is his positional play is horrible - it has got better - but you still say to yourself 'Why is he standing there?' quite a lot. This needs to be sorted and with some honesty for the supporters by Martin and the coaching staff - he's not very good, that's why my prediction for this game is 5-5.
The fact that McCarthy is one of the highest wage earners at the club (if not, the highest) and is our 3rd choice goalkeeper (behind 2 goalkeepers with questionable ability) is a damning indictment of our strategy and decision making spanning multiple regimes. I don't blame him so much, a contracts a contract and he's entitled to see it out but ****ing hell, its a sad state of affairs.
Charles is not a good enough passer for RM and I imagine it’s the same for McCarthy, we all know he’s rubbish with his feet. He’s a much better shot stopper than Baz though. Much like Charles has other very useful qualities which get overlooked. It might be money too, but really wouldn’t surprise me if it’s because he’s not a ball playing gk.
Last time we had a veteran keeper in the championship he didn’t do too badly. His distribution was poor but he got us so many points.
Nope. I don’t really want him back in not least because he’s definitely gone at the end of the season. I think it’s fair to say that we need a new number 1 next season though, regardless of the league we’re in.
It’s clearly style related. If it was solely on shot stopping then McCarthy would’ve been given at least a chance by now. Definitely appears that we see the goalkeeper as an 11th outfield player rather than the last line of defence. Although I do feel that most of the goals we concede aren’t really Bazunus fault as the chances we give away in general are so clear cut for the opposition, you would still expect a good keeper to make a few more “how has he saved that” moments than he has
Given that Stu is unavailable, I would go with: Bazunu KWP THB Bednarek Stephens Charles Downes Armstrong Brooks Edozie Adams (Could just as easily put Sulemana in there ahead of Edozie) I appreciate that there is minimal chance of that being the team!
I disagree with the bottom post. Bazunu has been absolutely dreadful for ages now. He lets so many shots in that a quality keeper would save. He’s cost us a lot of points. We actually give teams less clear cut chances than the majority of championship sides, statistically. We just have a keeper that is unable to make a save. Quite telling that Leeds, Leicester and Ipswich fans all think he’s awful too. You can see it on Twitter from when they’ve been watching our games in the run in.
I appreciate what you are saying, and Bazunu clearly isn’t the best shot stopper. But if we’d had a different keeper all season and played the same way we could be sat here talking about how many goals we’d given away due to piss poor distribution instead. The joys of being a Saints fan
That’s just really sad - not that Xg means zippo to me but it must to some football nurds - and that’s coming from someone who’s a bit of (not so much football tho).
