oh dear -- more longwinded gobbledy gook -

still not answered the question cc -
do you still think the 217 drivers that were polled in the most comprehensive poll of its type ever undertaken anywhere all got together and played a jolly little jape and voted for somebody they did not like -

you made this statement in your initial post i am just wondering if you still stand by it -- if you dont want to answer the question you only have to say you dont want to answer it -- no need for the gobbldey gook -

As much as we are all enjoying Martial artist asking the same question over and over and Cosicave giving the same answer over and over I think we can safely say that this thread has become something else. If you wish to keep asking Martial please use the PM system this site has so that the debate can possibly move on. I don't know about the others but I simply don't care about you two going at each other till the end of time, and then 10 minutes longer.

<laugh> There's more sport in this thread than a Portuguese herring!

The following is not gobbledy gook:

• When I answer your questions, you call it "goobledy gook".

• When I remove the words you claim to be blocking your vision, you say you can't understand what remains; which are your own words.

• I stand by every word I have used in this whole thread and can only apologise that you find some of them difficult to understand.

My apologies Xig. I didn't notice this until now.

I also think Private Messages would be a fairer way for us to discuss things if you wish to continue. The subject of the thread can become lost otherwise, and all too often we have ended up side-tracking recent threads. I should say that I was happy to continue this time because it was your own thread, although I'm sure it was becoming tedious for the forum and was pleased a lamp was bright enough to put our repetitive discussion into the shade, where it really belongs.

I will always answer PMs and I must say that you are retaining a politeness which I will reciprocate (respond to); thankyou. However, I hope you will appreciate that my purpose in contributing to a forum is a general exchange, so as to get a real feeling of the views of the general public; and that this will naturally be a priority over any private discussion. Please be aware that my answers will be consistent with your questions, and I see it as likely that we will both make reference to this thread at some point.

If you're happy with that, I look forward to hearing from you, and would like to re-iterate (repeat) that I like and respect you, even when you amuse me. I say this in all sincerity and as a measure of my respect.
:)
I will also copy and paste this post as a PM to you, as you may see one before the other.
Cheers

The poll of 217 was produced for the Christmas edition of autosport 2009. A time of the year when articles are thin on the ground because everyone that writes about motorsport is on holiday.

In the true spirit of Christmas cheer the article was whimsical to the more knowledgeable F1 followers. To describe the participants as “many of them were WDC's” is more whimsical than the article itself.

Some of the 217 never managed to qualify for a race and some of them never managed to finish one. One of the participants has been described as “as useful as a chocolate fire-guard” by the very person that proclaims that the pollsters are brilliant.

The pollsters were asked to select their top 10 great drivers. Autosport only printed the top 40. If they would have gone further then we would have seen how the 217 voted for them selves. They were not obliged to explain their votes or their definition of greatness.

People who take an interest in F1 do not need a Christmas article filler to formulate an opinion on driver ability. However, there are obviously some people out there that cling to such nonsense.

Excellent post RI.

Just one thing I think should be said: as I understand it, they were asked not to vote for themselves. However, I am quite certain this did not get in the way of having a bit of fun for a great many of them!

what exactly was so " whimsical" about the most comprehensive poll of its type that has ever been undertaken by any media outlet anywhere that included 217 ex formula 1 drivers spread over many decades of racing with 9000 starts and 270 wins between them .

think we can safely they have alot more combined knowledge and have forgotten more about formula 1 than we will ever know -

of course R1 if you have a more comprehensive credible poll by a greater number of credible experts -

Thenot606 is a public forum where anyone throughout the world can read the articles, study the threads, join the forum and contribute to the debate and hopefully take it forward.

Of course there will be the odd deluded individual that somehow thinks that not606 is a SMS service where people are only allowed to communicate on a one to one basis. Hence the repetitive posting of the same links or views when it is quite apparent that a mature sensible debater only needs to post a point once to get it across.

The article was about a driver that was considered to be better than Nigel Mansell but he was never considered to be worth voting for by people in the 217 driver poll such as Tiff Needel and Ralph Schumacher. One of the 217 was Kovalienien, a driver that Martial described as being as useful as a chocolate tea pot.

I have been challenged to put forward a link to a poll that was better than the 217. I have already made it clear to anyone that would listen that all polls are meaningless, flawed and are only clinged to by people that know very little about F1.

If you can't make your own mind up about the quality and skill of drivers then maybe you should take up a different sport like freestyle indoor marbles.

RI... I think you may have misunderstood the motivation behind the post and the veiled means that people (aka Trolls) look for a bite.

The thread had nothing to do with de Angelis, but was a method to put down one of his team mates and one of his friends. There is no point in entering in to that form of debate nor any point in entertaining them. I think the term is "feeding".

You will find neither objectiveness nor reasoned debate in a thread like this.

whether or not you think an experts poll such as the 217 ex formula 1 driver poll is meaningless is neither here nor there , as you are just an insignificant person on a chat forum that is not involved in formula 1 , never has been involved in formula one and never will be involved in formula 1 ,

where as the 217 ex formula 1 drivers that autosport polled spread over many decades many of whom were world champions have been involved in formula 1 , which by definition means that combined the 217 ex formula 1 drivers spread over many decades many of which were world champions have forgotten more about formula 1 than you will ever know -

so by definition there opinions have alot more credibility than your singular opinion will ever have , so a poll by such people of high credibilty has alot more credibility than somebody such as yourself that has never sat in a f1 car let alone drove one at the highest level ,

of course if you do have a poll of greater credibility than the 217 ex formula 1 driver poll -
