Can't read anything into these games whatsoever. Before the World Cup we lost 4-0 at home to Hungary. Look at what happened to Walker last night; does his hamstring after 20 minutes; now could miss the title run-in. Yeah I'm sure after that players were going to be chasing everything and giving 100% lol Feel for Southgate during these friendlies, because it's a no-win situation. Wants to play his best players to get them familiar with each other going into a tournie; but the first teamers don't want to put in too much effort because they have bigger games coming up for their clubs. The only thing the friendlies are good for is introducing new players. But even with that their performances will often be sub-par because of the lack of effort from team mates etc. And whatever happens, the moaners come out in their droves. One criticism I do have is the lack of natural full backs in the squad though. Two CBs brought on to replace Walker/Chilwell. Not good.
What did Sven ever do to excite anyone? His brand of football was worse than Southgate's, and he wasted a squad with more talent than the current one. Didn't get beyond a quarter final in three major tournaments. He was awful. Feel harsh attacking the bloke given his current situation, but football-wise, Southgate has done far better as England manager.
I am almost tempted to watch Wales over England tonight. I just imagine it will be a better spectacle as it is a competitive game.
We look much better than against Brazil. In part that has to be because Belgium are Not playing that cynical brand of football, fouling whenever we get the ball. I think we’d have been up against 9 players if that Brazil match was in a tournament. But then I have seen England get stiffed with decisions like that in too many tournaments to count.
I don’t know what to make of England. I think there are too many players in our team who could not get anywhere near the French team. But then we have some real worldies too. I don’t understand how my whole life England had great defences but now our selection pool is fragile.
