Tiger is excellent for food. Best Sunday lunch in Beverley. The two blokes who own or run it also have Cornerhouse which is also good for food. The two pie special midweek is superb. Nellies is still my of my favourites and the Sam Smiths best stout, when on song is like nectar. Had one in The Burns Hotel in York midweek, another Sam Smiths pub and it was like water in comparision. Same price, obviously. Dog and Duck is very popular, some good guest ales too. Can get a bit noisy on a Saturday night, because it is popular, so for me midweek afternoons is best. Excellent pie and chips too, £8.50, cannot go wrong, but you have to book. Monks Walk, again excellent guest ales. Popular, as Dog and Duck is with the week end tourists of which Beverley gets many. Woolpack. Lovely old boozer, food a bit iffy last time we went in, about three weeks back, had better in there. Beer decent. Royal Standard, top pint of Tetley bitter. No food, just dog biscuits. Angel, mid week is best, food two plates for under £14, beer decent. Wetherspoons. Got a pint and half of Titanic Plum porter in there the other week for under £2. It was 99p a pint! Service can be a bit dodgy as is the food as we all know but they do have some decent guest ales on, if you can get served. Chequers micropub. Getting some rave reviews from real ale ethusiasts. Voted second best pub in the area recently by Camra. Had a beautiful couple of pints of stout in there recently 12% proof but about £8 a pint, you couldn't manage more than two in an afternoon. You could have ate it with a spoon. Kings Head, I avoid, too expensive and watery beer. Push/Grapes, not for me even with the recent refurbishment. Ditto Beaver Green Dragon. Good choice of ales, particulary like the leeds pale ale. Incredible prices on food, two for a tenner, decent too. Windmill, never took to it. Queens, like sitting outside in Wednesday market in the summer, inside not so. Moulders Arms, still 1970 in there. Rose and Crown, decent Sunday lunch if you are lucky, sometimes its not as good. Gets very busy, so best midweek, decent ales. Atom. Bit studenty for me, but the beer is good if you are in the mood for it. Sun Inn, opposite the Minister. One of my favourites for live music. If you can catch the Hill Billy Troupe in there I doubt if you'd have a better night out anywhere in East Yorkshire. Beer not cheap but the entertainment is free, the ambience of the pub is wonderful. Love it. Clubhouse at Beverley Town FC, £3 a pint. Holderness Dark. So yes, I like Beverley, me.
Chequers, is that the micropub next to the bus station? Always liked it in there, but it’s been a while for me.
Green Dragon cheap food extends to kids meals too. Took one of the grandkids in and his meal was the same size as adult portions in some other pubs, and cheap as chips (and burger…and beans…and ice cream…and a drink) I know it won’t be relevant to you, but the vegan food in Atom is very good too.
The pub nearest the bus station is Nellies, very handy when my bus is late. Chequers is in Swabys Yard, off Dyer Lane, Saturday market, about a two minute walk from the bus station. There is a small pub across the road from the bus station but that is Atom, and Cornerhouse, is on, erm, the corner. Nellies hasnt changed much, still gas lights and open fires. No music, kids, dogs or mobile phones etc allowed.
Never knew his name, he always looked for me as I gave him a quid and let him keep the change. Fat chance now, the HDM is £1.65. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
When we was kids in Drypool our paperman was a really small bloke called Walt. He always wore a bloody big overcoat and flat cap no matter what the weather was like. When all the houses was demolished I saw him still selling papers in the City Centre even though he looked thirty years passed retirement.
You're so old you can remember when Drypool was Wetpool. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Did most of those lol… as the wifey repeatedly said are you sure you REALLY need another vino…. Erm yesssss!
Few years back i was doing some building work in Beverley town centre...me and my mate fancied a pint on our dinner break...went to green dragon and the cock head behind the bar wouldn't serve us because we were "workmen".....the following Saturday evening me and my mrs went in there dressed quite smart....the afore mentioned cock head said what would you like sir...." a pint of Guinness and a large glass of merlot please was my reply....when he put the drinks on the bar and wanted paying....i said "shove them up your well ****ed arse"...was quite pleased with myself....needless to say i have not set foot in the ****hole since
Because one person told someone else it was no good does not mean it is. No more than one person saying it is good means it is, Been to highly rated paces and have been disappointed whilst being pleasantly surprised at unprepossessing places.
I used to start out there on a Friday night, back in the late 1980s... It was 80p a pint of SS lager, 70p a pint of bitter (My father carried on going there up to the early 2000s for the mid week jazz music nights they had). Then on to the Valiant Soldier/furlong and firkin down the road and back to the market area afterwards (Cross keys?). I lived 200m from the Wool pack, so this was a good weekday evening/Sunday afternoon drink with family, but I think they only did ploughman's lunches back then, as food.
