The bad news: As far as I'm aware, any points deduction would not happen this season. The good news: The charge has come at an extremely disruptive time for them.
I'm not sure that matters too much. What happens if they fall away and end up not getting promoted? Also the EFL are also investigating Leicester. I just don't think there's enough time between now and the AGM's of the PL and EFL to hear the case plus the inevitable appeal. Therefore that's why any deduction would come next season. I can see us/Ipswich/Leeds kicking up an almighty stink though.
The PL can't impose a points deduction on an EFL club. As you say it'll likely be the start of next season should they be promoted. The EFL investigation is different of course but seemingly nowhere near a conclusion.
This on BBC: However, it is a remote possibility any punishment could come this season. If it did the Premier League would need to work with the EFL - but everything rests with the independent commission. It's the time frame that makes it unlikely then.
Don't see it. When they failed last time they got promoted there was no way of the EFL enforcing any punishment as I recall. Absolutely no chance they'll get any punishment from PL regulations this season while playing in a different competition under different rules. The beeb are just trying to make more of the story imo.
Said this elsewhere but surely Leicester would have been better off not trying to comply by spending **** all in Summer '22, not end up getting relegated and then just taking the 4-6 points on the chin? That'd surely have put them in a better position financially.
I think the points deduction amount is , in theory, relative to the level of wrongdoing. So possible doing it this way means it is “only” 4-6 points, rather than much more?
I think that next season's Championship might be more interesting than some are imagining in here. In my opinion there are two teams I feel will surprise people in the promotion race. The first is Sheffield Utd who I think will be totally rebuilt by Chris Wilder come the summer and be a totally different proposition from how inept they have been in the Premier League. The other team is Portsmouth who I sense will replicate what Ipswich have done this season so far and may ultimately grasp a second promotion. Portsmouth have been hugely impressive this season and I think the momentum will see them getting back-to-back promotions. They certainly seem like a team on the way up. It would be fun to have the opportunity to tonk Portsmouth next season if we do not get promotion this season yet I fear that they have turned the corner and will certainly be a force in 24/25. Portsmouth will be a dark horse in the next campaign. The absense of Leicester and Leeds will also make promotion that bit easier than in 2023/24. Most people on this site will be hoping that Portmouth will go straight back down. For me, they are a club with masses of potential. Saints fans have been fortunate in the past as PFC are typically mid-managed. However, when they get the running of the club right, there is a lot of potential there albeit I would argue that they are probably incapable of being top dog on the south coast for long as someone within the club will always put a scanner in the works. So far, their ownership has done well. The question will be whether the owners have the ability to take the club up to another level. My gut feeling is that they have the potential. Even with a massive injury crisis this season, they have dominated their league. No reason why a fully-fit and augmented Portsmouth cannot do the same next season.
I think they're making up the point deduction amounts as they go along tbh. Just seems backwards to me. They tried to comply by not spending anything and got relegated. They've been charged anyway so may as well have not bothered trying and not lost tens of millions of income from the PL money. Similar to Forest, they essentially got punished for holding out on a sale for more money because it fell outside the three year period. So they took a long term decision in relation to improving their financial situation but this is deemed punishable by rules which are supposedly there to promote sustainability? It's surely beyond any doubt now that these rules were never about protecting clubs from financial ruin but about protecting the big clubs from competition. They actually prevent any long term planning or investments due to this three year cycle that they've implemented. You wouldn't run a business like that in any other walk of life surely. The end of these rules is on the horizon imo and it'll be a great day for the sport. Would Markus/Kat have even been able to fund our rise through the leagues had these rules existed back then?
No chance the blue few achieve back to back promotions in my view. I think they'll be fairly safe in mid-table though. Agree it'll be an interesting league next year. It generally always is. Let's hope we're a part of it
But they're different rules for different competitions. How can you have a punishment given to you in one competition for breaking rules in another?
Yes but the PL can ask the EFL to apply the points deduction. A rules breach is a rules breach, regardless of which league the offence occurred in. At the end of the day, the PL and the EFL both come under the jurisdiction of the FA. And while the PL and EFL govern themselves, there's nothing to stop punishments being transferred between leagues.
Relative to the league though? Coming down with millions in the bank vs this league minus 3 of the top 4? Last year Burnley walked the Champ with a squad of loanees but couldn't recruit well enough for the Prem. Sheff are an Ipswich for me. Good at Champ football, piss poor in the Prem. This is what I'm talking about with the 'gaming' of the sytem, yo-yo-ing can become a successful strategy for any club, arguably a very profitable one if it's done right.
Exactly. As it stands, saints and Leeds have been absolutely shafted by at least 3 teams around them cheating last season. (Possibly 5 if you include Chelsea and City) If this doesn’t call for intra-league cooperation and coordinated punishments, then what does?
