In response to the Government's recent decision to set up a Football Regulator in the UK, I heard some bigwig on the TV say "The Premier League is the best league in the World" before moaning on about not wanting to see it damaged by politicians.

But why should everyone take it for granted that the Premier League is the best league in the World?

In my opinion, by plenty of ways of measuring it, the PL is not the best league in the World.
I would say it is not even the best league in England.
    And why?
    Money, of course.
    :emoticon-0164-cash::emoticon-0164-cash::emoticon-0164-cash::emoticon-0164-cash::emoticon-0164-cash:
The gravy train has ruined England's top Division. And it continues to damage and degrade English football.
And it's the uncontrolled obsession with money that has made it necessary for the Government to intervene.

When you have big clubs talking about finishing top 4 to enter the following season's Champions League you know football is f*****. Finishing 2nd to fourth is considered a success<doh>
It should be considered failure they have not won the title.

Additionally, if the Elite Clubs in the Premier League think it is so wonderful,
Why did they all secretly plan to sneak off to join a European Super League?
Only back-tracking when fans went utterly ballistic.

    Indeed.
Manchester United's highest ambition is now to finish 4th each season. It's their be-all and end-all.
    How the mighty have fallen.
    Sir Alex must be ashamed.

A trophy should be created for finishing 4th. Made of brass.

You're right. The Championship is a better, more competitive league.

Arsenal and Manchester City both knocked of of the Champion's League at the Quarter-Final stages.
Two German, one Spanish & one French team left in it.

There goes any hope of a 5th place Champion's League spot for the Prem <applause>

Utterly ridiculous idea anyway. We shouldn't even have four places.
The Champion's League is becoming a European Super league by the back door.
The same old elite teams making it through almost every season.
The notion of entering UEFA's premium Club competition by finishing fifth in your domestic league is laughable.
Of course, we all know it's much more about money nowadays than footballing achievement.

The Prem ought to have trophies made for finishing 4th, 3rd and 2nd.
In the shape of piggy banks.

Sheffield Utd relegated, and probably the same 3 going down who came up. The Premiership far from being the greatest league in the world is more like a nighmare for all except the big money six.

I’d be happy to get back to the championship- although with the parachute payments made to the failing prem teams this is also unbalanced

Yep, all about money and how clubs use it.
Burnley and Luton will probably be strong next season.

    This article boils down to a simple choice;

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c3ggr2yee9zo

    A) 100 more correct refereeing decisions per season - that's one more correct decision every 3.8 Premier League matches on average.
One correct decision every 342 minutes (5.7 hours) of football played.

    B) All the enjoyment of Football that VAR has taken away - due to 3 to 4 minute waits for decisions several times per game, dozens if not hundreds of great goals chalked off for microscopic offside decisions that no linesman would ever see in real time, and inconsistent application of the rules every weekend. Plus a string of obvious blunders.

The Premier League chooses option A.
    Thus clearly showing what every fan knows;
That the Premier League does not care at all about making football as enjoyable and exciting as it can be for fans to watch.
All it cares about is promoting itself as some kind of innovator, selling its product to global TV networks by claiming it is using cutting-edge science to "improve" the wares it is selling.

    Well B*llocks to them :emoticon-0172-mooni

You'd never know it, but the PREM kicks off again tonight :emoticon-0113-sleep

As a competition it is now less interesting than the SPL.
At least there you have two heavyweights slugging it out every sesson.

The Prem is now a 1 team league.
Who gives a wet slap which teams finish 2nd, 3rd and 4th?
Still, that's unadulterated greed and unchecked corruption for you.

Can’t agree with any of that. How does having the same two teams going for the title in Scotland make it more interesting? Last Season was exciting with Arsenal and Man City going toe to toe. This season I think it will be more exciting because more teams will be involved. Man City are not the side they were. Man United have bought well. Liverpool and Chelsea will be up there. My favourites for the Prem title are Arsenal.
I am really looking forward to it.

We have the same 1 team going for it in the Prem.
Many City have already won it.
They're never the side they were - until they win it (buy it) again.
    Same old hamster wheel.

Aberdeen won the title in 1985. Since then Rangers or Celtic have won it. How is that more interesting?

    Because it's Rangers or Celtic.
In the Prem it's Man City or Man City.

I wasn't referring to the history of the Prem.
There have been times when it was competitive and unpredictable.
    Just not now.
And not for a couple of years.

Seriously hope Man City don’t win the title. Looking down the list of winners it’s seriously been dominated by them the last seven years winning six times.

I’m tipping Arsenal this year tho

I fancy Arsenal this year. I really don’t have a problem with Manchester City. They have played some great football over the years.
