Just got home (got to love rail replacement buses) and what a performance. Every player was on it today and as complete a performance as you could want. 1st 10 minutes were even but once we scored the 1st, complete domination. Nice problem to have but when Chaplin is back fit, where does he play - Omari was superb and borderline unplayable in the number 10 role today. I suppose with burns injured - omari might play in that position but would you put him there after today’s showing? Broadhead and Luongo were both much improved from recent games and Axel is so much better at RB than Clarke. Very, very happy tonight - long may it continue
That was probably our most complete performance of the season, so far. We looked utterly unstoppable for large portions of that match. I cannot recall a single player putting in a poor performance over the 90 minutes - and this was against a Sheffield Wednesday side that had won five of their last seven games. Hopefully we can do enough to finish second, because it would be absolutely gutting if this team lost in the play offs. We need to do all we can to retain McKenna, the guy has thoroughly elevated this club and brought a monster winning mentality. I noticed a few posts recently harking back to the great, successful teams at Portman Road over the last several decades - most notably in the 60s, late 70s/early 80s, and the turn of the millennium. Obviously I wasn’t around for most of those years, so cannot comment on the quality of our players and teams. What I would say is that the modern day game is considerably different - and much more challenging - for a side of our stature. What we’re doing this season, in a football world and league built to enforce massive financial inequality (through parachute payments etc.) is definitely special. The three relegated clubs - all were fairly established in the top flight before relegation - should be walking this league with the money and talent available. Several games left and we are still well in the automatic promotion conversation and playing our best football in decades. Drink this in and enjoy it lads, it may not last.
To be serious, though of course the post was tongue in cheek …… you could also take it at face value, all the top 4 are putting in performances consistent with auto, including you miserable lot. A strange season, at least one (could even be 2) of us are going to be understandably disappointed - hope it’s not us, though we have form in that direction.
That was a fabulous performance in fact the best this season and it just goes to show what we can do when we play with pace and urgency, ok Wednesday were terrible and beat Millwall as the worst side ive seen all season, everyone was on form with Omari and the midfield dominating the pitch to such an extent that even Jackson played a few well placed passes before falling back to his usual poor standard. According to a Wednesday vlog we scored a lucky 2nd goal because it rebounded off the bar from a Moore header and was put away by Burgess, i think losing gracefully isnt there thing and i think they are doomed to relegation unless theres a miracle.
We were outstanding, and Wednesday had a few decent chances first half, the game could have been a very different scoreline if it’s 2-1 instead of 3-0. Rohl didn’t park the bus and didn’t try to hit us on the break like so many sides this season. You could see early on from the way the sides were set up we were going to get loads of chances, but I think he was less worried about the result and more concerned with his players learning the system he wants to play. The number one thing they got wrong was their hesitant pressing. They either needed to press quickly or stand off and they did neither, so we had so much space. Most sides counter our tactics pretty well, they didn’t bother.
