Why do we love our top4 clubs to falter in Europe?

Was watching footie in pub and cheers went up when Napoli scored and last night was anyone else rooting for Leverkusen to put one over Chelsea?

Is this a British thing, where we either go for underdogs or wish our wealthier EPL clubs to be beaten as they've bankrolled success?

    Is it because we're a jealous breed?<confused>

Thing is when I watched Fulham or Birmingham I wanted them to win.

We'd like to see an English team do well, but the majority of people hate Chelsea, Man U, Man City, Liverpool for various reasons. I admit I'd support foreign opposition against some English sides. Arsenal is the English side I'd like to do well in the CL, and Birmingham the EL (only because of Hughton though).

I think it's the same in most foreign countries ,in Germany for example the majority of fans hate and love to see Bayern Munich fail.i'd put this down to the rivalry between clubs who play each other week in week out.
Not sure what it's like in other countries but i would say it's the same in Spain don't just think it's an English thing.

edit:Maybe the likes of 5 goals and OT can shed some light on it

I get the Arsenal thoughts but aren't they like ManU......a side been built up without crazy cash?

Or is because SAF is a tosser of the highest order? LOL

I just see Arsenal as the most likeable of the top 6 (excluding us ;)) as they play attractive football and live within their means. Man U are no City, but they still spend silly money - ~£20m each on De Gea, Young, Jones just this summer.

By enlarge they're arrogant. They think they should be treated differently to other clubs due to being in the CL.

It was hilarious on Radio 5 Live when Leverkusen scored the winner against Chelsea last night. The commentators were so obviously gutted after their usual prolonged slavering over a team in the top 4. Excellent entertainment.

You can sugarcoat it all you like, but it's jealousy.

Honestly, for me, I just don't really care. I look at it from a pure neutral point of view. Couldn't care a less who are playing. If its got no bearing on Newcastle then they can crack on. Certainly wouldn't cheer any other team though.

I don't think so. I personally find it amusing because when a top 4 team struggles, you have the glory hunting fans who have no idea what to do. I'm not jealous of a team like Man City that was once a fans club, and is now an artificial Arab's plaything...

    No?

I hate Man United , Chelsea and Citeh in the league so it's only natural that I hate them when they're playing foreign opposition. But I would like to see Arsenal do well in the league as I admire their play and what Wenger has contributed to football , which is why I watched their game against Dortmund yesterday and supported them as well.

I have no problem with people hating them consistently in the league and Europe. I don't even have a problem with people hating them, but it does come down to jealousy. Liverpool are on of the most hated clubs on here. Why? Because people are jealous of the way the media treat them and because Enrique and Carroll chose to join them over us.

If I'm honest as funny as it is I like the english clubs to do well just because it reflect how good the PL is and why its the best league in the world.

I think you're half right in that some people will be jealous, but I think for a lot of fans, its simply the attitude of the clubs' fans/ managers and the way the media fawn over them that they cant stand.

I probably hate Stoke more that all of the Top 6 teams, but I'm definitely not jealous of them! I hate them for similar reasons; scummy fans and a moron of a manager!
