Re. the origin of "Mackems", my theory, developed in the last two minutes, is that it stems from the proximity of the old Roker Park to Roker Pier, one of the UK's best fishing piers, for mackerel in particular. On Saturday afternoons, those fishing for mackerel on the pier would down their rods and head off to Roker Park. The fishy smell they took with them pervaded the ground, and spawned (sic) the name Mackem, derived from "them (stinking) mackerel fishers".
