Is Steven Taylor being wasted from set pieces?

  1. Since the start of this season, Steven Taylor has been positioned on the far side of the box when we take set pieces, obviously because he's the best player in the side for winning headers in the air, and we obviously have a plan for him to head the ball back across goal.

However, it doesn't seem to be working.

Why don't we just let him do his own thing, and come up with his own tricks from set pieces?

We didn't really have a plan for him at the end of last season, and he scored 3 goals. He's a predator in the box, but we seem to be using him in the same position all the time, on the far side to try and head it back across the box.

    Remember this? -

And the game before against Brum, came from him running through the center of the box, beating two players in the air and power heading it down into the goal.

He's a poacher and is eager to score, why is Pardew using him like this? He's wasted just trying to stand at the far side of the box, attempting to direct the ball back across goal. It's not worked so far, he should just be allowed to do his own thing like last season.

I think he started 7 games last season, and in each game got a header or shot on target. He was a proper goal threat from every set piece, now he's just used as a target man to knock things down.

It was something like 3 in 3 for Saylor at the end of the season wasn't it? I hope we get or set pieces sorted out soon, that's one part of our game I think has actually gotten worse since last season.

  4. Well obviously since last season we lost Andy Carroll, and a lot of our goals came from Barton feeding Carroll, who would score or knock it down to someone else.

But we seem a lot more dangerous direct from freekicks that we did last season. Raylor and Cabaye both look good shots on goal.

I agree he is a major threat at set plays and we aren't using him as well as he could be. If it was up to me I'd let him do whatever he wants at attacking set plays because as you say last season he proved how good he is. However Pardew seems to have the team set up very disciplined, every knows there job and what Pardew expects of them and they stick to there job. This is very evident all over the pitch and although I'd like to see the likes of Saylor getting more freedom when attacking corners etc I quite like the disciplined approach as it's working every where else on the pitch and it's the reason we have the best defence.

Doing his own thing! It's called a set piece for a reason, its been practised in training to work. Maybe more work needed on set pieces, but we got goals last season based on the centre halfs and forwards effectively blocking for each other, you don't just say go out and do what you like!
