    Exactly........

The Blue Few are like Little Englanders harking back to the days of the Empire. The British Empire means nothing in the modern world, and the Blue Few have done nothing in the modern game, except for the glorious spell where they bankrupted themselves, and somehow managed to go bang in the richest league the game's ever known.

In the modern game they are like Oxford and Luton, poor gates, but overspending to buy a trophy and spend a short time in the top flight. However, like Luton and Oxford they'll soon be back where they've spent 95% of the past 50 years. In the lower Leagues and playing second fiddle in their neighbours shadow.

I'd say we are more like the violas (or even cellos) at the moment. 1st violins are the top dogs, with the leader of the orchestra being Man Citeh as it stands. Pompey have followed the baton once or twice but Southampton have mostly been inside 1st (the ones who forget to rosin their bows) or second violins at best.

Luton and Oxford are firmly in the woodwind section. Oboes, I'd venture.

No, I would say that Pompey are more like tubas; faintly comic even when trying not to be, and when it comes down to it, a group of bass players if ever I saw them.
Of course, that are also quite used to playing in the "pit" as well.;)

I was in Paris the other week when a guy said oh so you are from Southampton. What a great football club . Great history and tradition and one of the best academies in Europe. I said what do you think of Portsmouth and he said who are they?

    Enough said.

In ten years time no one will remember PFC other than for being a football club that was chucked out of the football league for being a dodgy bunch of bastards.

My neighbour players the tuba. Showed me this awesome video of this professional tuba player.

Seriously, TDA, you need to calm down. Having so much hate is just a wasted emotion, in my opinion.

If it is history that you want you want then go and support Maidenhead United. The English club with real history.

Now if you are a football purist and like to see football played the way it is meant to be then you will have to change your colours to red and white.

You don't seriously believe a word of that, do you Adam? He's as big a WUM as SB3.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we were being played off by the same guy.

If this were true - that Southampton have a major global presence and are well thought of around the world - explain how so many comments on Matt Le Tissier videos on the net from people outside England start with "I've never even heard of him" before saying how great he was. Le Tissier was Southampton's greatest ever player and probably the greatest English midfield/forward in history yet because he played for Southampton he never achieved international recognition for his skills.

Wake up and face facts. Neither Southampton or Portsmouth are thought in any high regard by anyone outside their own fanbases. Nobody with any knowledge of English Football would put either club in an all time top ten list of English clubs, in fact the two clubs might not even make the top twenty. We not giant of English football, we are not giants of world football, we are the big fish in the little pond of Hampshire and that means sod all to the world at large.

And anyway, even if I believed your story about a conversation in Paris with some guy that would still just be one guy. I've talked to Americans who know a lot about Portsmouth and almost nothing about Southampton except that they are Portsmouth's local rivals. That doesn't then mean that because these one or two people I've spoken to know more about Portsmouth and almost nothing about Southampton that the United States must therefore be very familiar with my club and only vaguely aware that your club exists. Knowledge varies from individual to individual and you cannot super-impose the opinions of some guy you happened to talk to onto the entire nation that man was in.

Saddest part of the story is, instead of asking this "guy" what he thought about Southampton, and all the other history and trivia, that he might have known about Godder's faves, the first thing Godders asks, is about Pompey!

  14. In my local barber's shop, the guys working in there are Palestinian and Albanian. They have all heard of Southampton FC and regard them as a Premier League team (and the two guys are confused as to why they are not actually playing there).

Posting on here is rather like fireworks night, light the blue touch paper and retire! <laugh>

Your overdue spanking will happen Scummers, and I will be at the match against Leicester in the North Stand as usual as we start to recover a bit of form.

Two new loan signings from WBA I see today! PUP <ok>

Sounds like the start of a joke Rich - but no mention of a Scotsman <laugh>

PS. Is Sweep neutral when it comes to football, or have you convinced him that Saints are approaching Champions League status ? Has he ever been to St Marys ? These are the facts we need to know.......

  20. Sweep is certainly aware of Saints' potential and has squeaked his approval on numerous occasions. He's not ready for a trip to SMS just yet...
