The rich beggars getting paid top dollar, and their respective clubs, should all be forced to contribute towards the saving of the teams less fortunate. Torquay and Yeovil fit that mandate and it would be sad to see either of them disappear from existence and so there has to be way more help for clubs that face fire sales to meet the bills. Perhaps some kind of levy would fit the bill but how it would be done is questionable. A single transfer deal of let's say 50 million quid would support all of the clubs in League One and Two for goodness knows how long and the disparity in finances are shocking when you consider how the top clubs splash the cash at a moments notice without a thought as to how the lower clubs support themselves. Most lower level clubs will use home grown talents to fill their rosters and that in itself is worthy of financial support from the Football League and I really think it's time to review the foreign player quotas and keep the money at home so to speak. The money earned from TV revenues at the top should have a percentage lopped off to feed the less fortunate clubs but only if they have a viable financial business plan.
I've always had a soft spot for Torquay One of the true outposts of English football like Carlisle. Since they lost the National League playoff final to Hartlepool at Ashton Gate 2 or 3 years ago they've been in freefall although GJ is still there. For now. Sold all their best players, like Conor Lemonhaig-Evans and then they got relegated from the National League the season before last. Their results this season have been an equal amount of wins and defeats and they are currently 11th in the National League South, some 7 points off the Playoffs I really hope someone steps in and saves them.
Just seen this. Gutted for the club and fans. As a football fan I felt the same for Newport County, Bury and Chester City back in the day. Newport have finally bounced back but the others are still gone. I’m sure there have been - and will be - many others but it’s tragic for the game. I’m sure there’s enough money sloshing around in the Premiership to provide an ‘emergency’ fund to stop this happening. Edit - I tried to cut and paste a news article but it didn’t seem to work.
