I’m inclined to agree. LOI is a crap standard, which in a sense is good because he can stand out and get minutes to impress the manager. He’s always going to look like a world beater playing Shamrock Rovers and Galway United, even Ryan Woods would smash that league in. But that being said, there wasn’t a massive queue of League One or Two clubs clamouring for him and you have to question why. Maybe there will be if he does well this season, but given that we have signed the players we have, it’s hard to see him getting a look in. For us to promote any youth player at the moment, they’re really going to have to stand out. Matty Jacob is from the same age group and has only just broken into the first team picture, so it might be that Jarvis gets a look in next season.
People won't like this but Harry Vaughan is overrated as ****. Not a bad player at all and he has a decent touch but he is quite obviously an under-21s player at best right now. He played way more first-team minutes for us than he deserved. The fact he's struggling in League 1 reinforces that. He's not particularly quick for a winger and physically he is a boy playing men's football.
Jarv has just turned 21, Jacob will be turning 23 soon Jacob came through with KLP and Greaves 2 years before Jarvis got his scholarship
True but in terms of development, Jacob has been given a much better hand. Left to Gateshead for a full season, Jarv went to Scarborough, tore it up, recalled then left in the development side for the rest of the season.
Matty Jacob has shown that there is a way into the first team for our academy prospects - it took him a while, but he did have a long time out to recover from serious injury. It may yet come for Will Jarvis too, but it's no surprise to me that it hasn't happened yet because it's bloody hard for a youngster to break into a rapidly developing and ambitious squad - as the likes of Liam Cooper and Will Atkinson discovered 15 years ago when City were in a similar position.
Normally the case but a very unique set of circumstances opened up where we had no fit senior players to play in his position, he was here and available but we still decided to play Tom, Dick and Harry in roles that didn’t suit them instead of letting Jarvis have the opportunity, even if it was just coming off the bench and playing in the 2x cup games, the replay in particular. That’s the point that was made, not that he should be here right now in our first team getting a chance. There is no way he’s getting a look in with our squad currently, although if he’d been given the chance in January and excelled he would obviously be in the picture.
I would be surprised if they weren't trying to get Jarvis a League One or League Two loan during January, which wouldn't have been possible if he had turned out for us. The fact that they failed to find that loan, and sent him back to the same club in Ireland, makes that refusal look odd in hindsight but it was probably done with good intentions.
I meant that they were both in the U21s together. Jacob is a bit older yeah, but both were seen as development squad players.
I think it’s good for fans to be frustrated by youngsters at the club not getting chances. It’s the only thing that really kept us going during the latter years of the Allam’s reign. KLP, Greaves, Fleming, Dan Batty all home grown lads performing at good levels for us over recent years. We’ve got more good young lads coming through and it would be a shame if it stopped the pathway because of the ambition, of course that’s only part of the game. But as shown previously players are capable of surpassing us especially those on the fringes.
players can develop at diff stages townsend left us without making an appearance, and didnt play at championship level until he was about 24-25, been a regular at westbrom since he signed
Harry Vaughan came on at 78 mins in Bristol Rovers 2-1 win over Carlisle - Andy Smith unused sub in Cheltenham 1-1 draw away at Wigan Friday night - Ryan Woods played 75 mins in Exeter's 1-1 draw with Fleetwood - Thimothee Lo-Tutala played the full game in Doncaster's 1-0 win over Wimbledon. - Tom Nixon came on at 77 mins in Doncaster's 1-0 win over Wimbledon. - Callum Jones did not feature in Forest Green's 1-0 lwin over Tranmere. - Harvey Cartwright played the full game in Grimsby's 1 -1 draw with Morecambe. - Harry Wood came on at 79 mins Grimsby's 1 -1 draw with Morecambe. - Owen Foster not sure what happened at Chorley, he must be back or injured. - Jason Lokilo didn't feature in Vizela's 3-3 draw with Estoril Praia. - Oscar not in match day squad, whereby Bahia beat Juazeirrense 2-1 (Bahia top of the league)
I've watched the LOI quite a bit recently and it's really not that bad. They do try and play with the ball on the ground. Compare that to Grimsby and there's absolutely no similarity between football at that level and how we play. It's way more physical and very direct.
Most players don't really develop until they're 22-23, and half our squad didn't play Championship football until a similar age as Townsend which is why I always find it a bit mad that we expect our academy players to at 19/20
Compared to our league, it's cheeks and you're right, that doesn't make it the standard of the San Marino First Division, but it explains why a lad who can't get near our first team can go and look outstanding. Most of the players that come across from Ireland end up going to L1 or L2 clubs, it's very rare (at least in recent times) that a player has done so well for a LOI team that they find themselves playing in the Championship or PL. Not saying it doesn't happen, but it's not happening consistently, at least not as much as players coming from Scotland. The LOI top flight is ranked 35th in Europe, below those of Kazakhstan, Moldova, Kosovo and Azerbaijan. It's only three places above the Faorese Betri deildin and I can comfortably tell you that outside of KI and maybe Vikingur, you've got genuine National League North standard teams in there.
He’s under good guidance and will likely be top 3 players in the division. Should also get some European experience too.
