I believe that is where he finished his career, he was also a pro are Temple Newsome near Leeds, as I played there a couple of times and saw his name on the honours board.
Oh aye it’s part of the test for sure. Just restarting when you hit a great drive (well…great for me anyway) and still end up with a challenging lie. I saw aerial footage recently showing flooding and it really showed the regular undulations. I’d still happily play there mind you, it was more a joke about someone suggesting it should be levelled for the academy (or something) that’s all.
It's funny how your best rounds seem to happen when you get the ball always finishing on the up slope. The best round I had there was a 68 gross and all by T shots finished on an up slope.
Assuming you’re talking about The Lawns, it’s just under 30 acres, with three large (listed) blocks of flats on it, it will go for development, there’s far better options.
I know it's green belt, and I am not sure of the acreage, but I have always felt Anlaby Common could be used for better purposes. I used to walk to school passed those fields every school day, and always thought there could be some good use made of the area.
It’s common land, we’ve all got the right to stick our livestock on it, same as Beverley Westwood. If the council thought there was any chance of changing its designation, they’d be building houses on it already.
Forgotten all about Temple Newsome GC - first round I ever played was on that course back in '65 I think. Always wanted to get into golf - caddied at Hessle GC for a few years in my early teens but never could afford to play. Many years later, back on holiday in England, early '90s, my brother in law invited me for a round at his club in Hessle. I was totally taken aback when we didn't head out to Hesslewood and Ferriby Road ! Bloody Humber Bridge development had forced its relocation !
I knew it was a no no, but just seems an area which could be used better. The only livestock I ever saw on it was Gypsy horses tethered there, Barchards had a football pitch in the field next to the school, which we used to play on, but all the time I lived there I can never remember seeing any livestock on it. Sometimes the laws in this country are archaic.
The first time I played Temple Newsome I remember finishing the round and my feet inside my shoes were black with coal dust. My first set of golf clubs was bought from John Easey who was the pro at the old Hessle course. I joined the New Hessle course in the late seventies, when Springhead was getting more and more difficult to get a round in, as it was so busy.
Must be hard to get enough club on the ball on a down slope, especially if you want it to go high. You'd have to be standing at right angles to the slope!
My memories of the old course in Hessle are somewhat vague, but I seem to recall the first few holes were quite tricky narrow fairways with lots of trees around, but probably after 8 or 9 holes, you had to cross over Ferriby Rd for the back nine which were less aesthetically pleasing on the eye. The bloke I caddied for was one of 2 or 3 brothers, who were all butchers called Coates(?), but my guy was forever in the (wet!) woods, which pissed off his golf partners cos I struggled finding his ball and it slowed down the pace of the round ! I also recall that caddies were not allowed in the club house after the round for a sandwich or a lemonade in those days. Class snobbery was rife. Think we earned about 3/- (3 bob) for a round.
