Isn't it time we should stop the ridiculous and false hope all fans have every Summer. Until there's a fair and level playing field we're just pissing in the wind. What's the point ? We may enjoy the day out with mates watching the game we once played but let's get real, promotion to the Premiership is for a chosen few.
We have to keep hoping - or what’s the point? We might as well play football against sides with their goals bricked up and hope for a draw. Luton, Huddersfield, Blackpool, Swindon, Oxford, QPR, Cardiff, Swansea, Charlton, Bolton etc have all done it. Why not us? Keep the faith RP.
How much money do the teams that get relegated from the lower divisions get to maintain their challenge to rise from the ashes of failure? I'm sorry to say I can't understand the premise of parachute payments as in my books if you overspent to try and stay in the Premiership, or to get there, then that's your own fault and you should face the fallout you alone have created. I fail to see how we are supposed to compete on what is clearly not a level playing surface or rules when others get large sums of money to finance their early return to the top. Would I be right in saying that these payments are regarded as income which is the base on which the FFP work their magic because if that is so then how do mere mortals like ourselves survive?
maybe its time for a change? TOP 2 IN CHAMPIONSHIP promoted 3rd plays 6th /4th plays 5th then........... instead of a final ....... winner of 6th v 4th plays 18th in prem and other team plays 19th at Wembley .. SO PROMO COULD BE 4 up and 2 down or 3 up and 3 down or 2 up and 2 down!
we all know what we are getting into at the start of the season. I still think it should be 6th plays 5 th at team in 5ths ground, one off game. the winner then plays at the team that finished 4th, then the winner of that plays 3rd place at their ground. Someone is going to finish 3rd, possible 20+ points clear of the team in 6th with the only advantage being a second leg at home. I hate the play offs.
I have often thought that a promotion/relegation play-off system could be done with the teams from both the Premiership and Championship. The top 2 and bottom 2 teams should still get whichever fate awaits them with automatic promotion still in place and relegation for the last 2 in the divisions. The last team in the Championship promotion zone should play the last relegation team to see who goes up or down with the possibility that the Prem team could stay up if they win the play-off final against their Championship rivals. I would truly like to see the end of the relegation parachute payments because it creates an uneven playing field for others in the Championship and could probably stop teams overspending to stay in the Prem which would be beneficial to all. Somewhat on the same track as realred on this one
If I recall correctly this is how the play-offs started, at least in the lower leagues. I remember us beating Sheff Utd over 2 legs to relegate them, only to lose to Walsall who took the promotion spot. If Championship clubs can’t compete with PL sides after relegation, how will they while they still have their full PL sides? If we introduced this, I’ll wager this will decrease the chances of promotion from the Championship.
I remember that We were in L1 I think and they finished near the bottom of what was the Championship We beat them 1-0 at home and drew 1-1 away and that relegated them. Seem to remember we took a right beating at Walsall. Was it 4-0 at the old Fellows Park in a replay ?
I have a feeling I was at that game. I went to Walsall and saw us beaten soundly in the pouring rain. 1988 I believe? If that’s the event you’re referring to I was on my way to my honeymoon in Pembrokeshire - we decided to go to the match first. The weather was awful - and so was the football. NOT a good start to the honeymoon!!!!
I went to the home game against Sheffield United Beautiful spring day and a good crowd I think Walshy scored our goal and Carl Shutt put us 1-0 up at Bramall Lane before Morrisey levelled with a rocket. We were hanging on a bit at the end ! Still think the Walsall hammering was a replay though ?
I thought they beat us at home 1-3 and we beat them 0-2 at their place Walshy getting the goal to take us to a extra time and losing on penalties
