Smart manager will see the scope to continue climbing the hill is limited and see the massive cliff the other side.

Leverkusen will be picked clean by all and sundry in the summer. Bayern included.

    Alonso needs to understand that.

    Real Madrid ;)

In the end Alonso is headed ultimately for one of 3 clubs if he has his way. LFC 3rd choice, Bayern 2nd choce (maybe) and real madrid as the ultimate first choice.

We need to accept that. if we get 3 years out of him before real come knocking then it'll be a great 3 years cos they don't come knocking for flops.

    Depends on his mentality.

If it were Klopp (prior to him joining us) and it was those three clubs we'd be his first pick.

What is Alonso's mentality when it comes to management? Does he want to buy success or build it? Only time will tell since he's not had the choice so far

    same as player.

    dominating,
    high work rate,
he looks for extra passes to draw teams in in the press then springs a rapid advance.
Extremely small gaps between the lines.
adaptable (see wirtz playing false 9 after injury to his striker)
seeks turnovers high up the park.

In germany this means a huge amount of short passes and as he's got two really good quasi wingbacks he is using a 3421 style system but in reality the 1 is not a striker right now.

I'd say look for a high back line (like we have)
Attacking width from full backs (like we had)
    high press (like we have)
rapid attack of space once s it's opened. (like we do)

He will adapt to the players and the new scenery but philosophy is control, hard work and such.

he's always been a smart guy. he won't just try to photocopy what worked in germany. he will take what he is handed and work form there rather than demand 20 players he can't have or like the media click baiters want us to beleive.

JB asked about Xavi - unless it was a typo.

OK, i see. I took it as alonso was the ask.

Xavi is a different kettle of fish.

I thought his route into management showed poor judgement on his part. the quick bucks at the end of a long an distinguished playing career over in the middle east. No real sort of academy to be the man at a major club then by managing out there.

Again this is the guy the player son the team bus would turn to to ask his opinion. Not messi not anyone else.

He's another classic, keep the ball Spanish coach. Dominate the possession stats. Then press high to win it quickly back.
more rigid imo in terms of formation as a 433 man.

Its the 4 ps. Positions, Possession, press, perceive.

you have to know your position quite well, then dominate possession of the ball, press hard to win it back as fast as you can, know where everyone is on the park at all times.

who knows where he goes next but its not looking that well on him in terms of the comments made when leaving barca by himself.

In many ways totally different approach to klopp get a similar emphasis on getting the ball.

Be in the right place, where he says, scan the pitch constantly knowing where to go next. pass, pass, pass pass.

Yes I did. Should have realised it may have been mistaken for Xabi. (I'd read an article yesterday about Xavi leaving Barcelona and wondered if he would be an alternative good fit.)

Anyway, thanks to mito for the detailed description about both.

Can’t see Alonso going to Leverkusen straight to Bayern. Possibly may do it, just not sure if he’ll somewhat taint the reputation of Leverkusen fans if he jumps ship to them 1 season.

I don't think anyone in germany thinks anything of anyone going to bayern as they all do it.

Alonso wins a title at leverkusen after a semi in the Europa last year and honestly they are in cloud cuckoo land.

all the realists clubs in germany know Bayern pick any rival clean so its almost expected. the exception that proved the rule is klopp.

He's been at Leverkusen since october 2022 and took them from relegation zone to 6th plus a Europa semi final and this full season may win the entire thing. Its not exactly jumping ship.

But it may damped his relationship with the fans leaving for Bayern to then walk the league there.

It may happen. Who knows how important alonso feels that relationship building is or whether he’s comfortable in Germany and wants to stay there for a few more years. Thing is at Bayern you either win the league and CL or you’re ****, no imbetween.

He’ll be expected to go there and win everything.

Is he happy with that? Or does he see Liverpool as a long term project he could spend 3/4 years there and try compete and win a few things? Although expectation is high I think he’ll be given a hell of a lot more time here than he would at either other club where the expectation is to win everything from day 1.

Roy Hodgson: Crystal Palace manager steps down with club 16th in Premier League
Roy Hodgson has stepped down as Crystal Palace boss so the club can "bring forward their plans to appoint a new manager".
Hodgson, 76, was "taken ill" during training on Thursday amid reports he was to be sacked.
The Eagles have lost 10 of their past 16 Premier League games and are 16th in the table, five points above the relegation zone.
"This club is very special and means so much to me," said Hodgson.

Palace visit Everton, who are 18th in the Premier League, on Monday night, with Hodgson's assistants Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington in charge of the team.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner, 49, is the strong favourite to replace Hodgson on a permanent basis.

The other way of looking at it is Liverpool have been riding a Klopp wave for the last few years. He can't come in and make car improvements, it isn't a rebuilding project, it's a maintaining/slight tweaks to improve type setup; the fall is much bigger than the reward.

irrespective of need or otherwise we might have briefly hit the ffp hump. maybe long term. who knows.

clubs can't throw out players and just buy with abandon unless they have masses of fake revenue.

whoever the manager is that comes in they will have a decent squad to get started with.
they can tweak how they like but they can't throw out 5 years of youth work or they will fail.

we've two ok players in nearly every position so the focus ought to be trying to just shape that towards the game that whoever it is that comes in feels will win things.

plus future planning for bye bye salah and vvd of course.

I didn't watch that game as i had no wish to poke my eyeballs out with a rusty coat hanger so I can only comment on the still.

Did you suffer through that game to see this early incident.
