The 'knock kneed chicken.....' song was introduced on May 3rd 1970 at the City v Leeds u, game, Chris Chiltons testimonial. Its been said on here before, probably by me, but here goes. It was also the night City's kop moved en masse from the South Stand to the East Stand, aka Kempton. So called named after the residential street behind it, Kempton Road. Incidentally older fans may remember an attempt by the fans to rename the South Stand, The Sledmere End, after the road behind that, Sledmere Grove but it never really caught on. We ( the younger koppities of the day) even bought red berets from Army and Navy stores so we stood out and other fans might copy us, and a few did, that and other items of clothing that we wore as uniforms, too numerous to list. Although silk cravat like scarves were a particulary favourite of mine worn at that time. Highly fashionable, believe it or not. I see Crystal Palace's ultras do something similar today in dressing the same and Man u Stretford Enders have done for some time, but we did it well before them. Anyhow, the point of this post. Back in 1970 City fans were a bit more pro active in those days. Dave Dewberry in preperation to the move to the East Stand, because it didn't 'just happen', it was pre planned, over 29,000 turned up, and Dave himself had song sheets printed with the words of several new songs which were handed out on the night. As it was the move was a tremendous success and the vocal support that night, for a testimonial was deafening. Perhaps some of the 'young tigers' of today could take a leaf out of some some of us oldies book and do something themselves instead of just waiting for it to happen?
One thing I've noticed with the singing in the stadium is that many people/sections only like to join in and not start the song which is understandable but as soon as they join in those that started then stop. To make a better atmosphere the songs needs to last longer. If they are started in the North it can take a good while for it to filter down the east all the way to the South
Was the move to Kempton a full time thing or a floating one? Some of my early times at City when quite young the west ham cup game, man utd in div 2, Sunderland visits I am sure the visiting fans had all of Kempton and on occasions what looked like all the north as well.
Not everyone moved to the Kempton and some stopped on Bunkers. But overall the move was a good one and the atmosphere and vocal support for City increased ten fold. Then the police moved in and of course this was before segregation and numbers thinned out a bit and we had away fans sometimes trying to 'take' kempton as was the norm in those days.. So eventually a fence was built two thirds of the way along the terrace at the North Stand end to house away fans. I cannot remember the actual sequence of events, before or after the fence went up, but I dont think there was a fence up when West Ham came in 72. When our crowds hit rock bottom clubs like Sunderland who have always looked at our fixture as a good day out, and the Sheffield clubs likewise could outnumber us and by sheer weight of numbers and sometimes with police and club backing would be given the East Stand and the North Stand and we were shoved back onto Bunkers. When I say 'we' I mean the younger generation of fans.
For the 'young tigers*' they will need contacting on Instagram, Twitter-X, Snapchat and Tik Tok (& others they're keeping secret from us...) Most of the young tigers on here are eligible for over 50s life insurance
Yep, Brian Horton's Black n Amber Army and Disco Dancing City still make me a Young Tiger compared to songs recalled from 1970.
I know we can all get a bit inaccurate about dates and times but me and my mates from Hessle / Hessle rd were singing all these on Bunkers or Sledmere before any move to Kempton , we had Mr Nesbitt fir company . When West Ham came the wood fence was up as I recall a tall black lad of City’s punching a few as they tried to climb over , not sure if it was Moreton, although he didn’t go too often so not certain as I say details can get sketchy - the songs listed earlier were ‘creative’!!
Slade’s My oh My is a good anthem and has a real hook- mind you could be a Wolves song ? Think the Herman’s Hermits song is already somone else’s isn’t it?
I remember the West Ham cup game(1973)?,I was 12 at the time and I got took by some of the older lads from Driff.Believe it or not,3 of them were Leeds Utd fans and they had just went along for a scrap!!...One of them was a lad called Kev Nelson(who was dating my big sister at the time) and the other 2 were Bernard and Carson Woodhouse.
