    Jonny Marr! Yes!

Edge is gash though, just uses loads of boring fx.

Agree with this, thrash is the hardest to play. Someone like Alex Skolnick pisses all over most rock guitarists, the riffs alone are harder than most rock solos.

A great musician I knew once said 'Theres a difference between playing the notes and playing the music' and I think that rings nice and true in this case. Thrash metal, speed metal etc. can be insanely difficult to get to grips with but it's all about mastering sweep picking and practicing arpeggio runs over and over until your hands do it at high speed automatically. You won't see some real quality, expressive improv in an obscure chord progression from a purely thrash metal guitarist because that isn't how they've learned and it isn't what they've learned.

Aware of both and disagree that they fit that description.

You'll know that Alex Skolnick is actually a blues guitarist then! <laugh>

Just because he's a blues guitarist doesn't mean he's playing with feeling, like Joe Bonamassa even though some may disagree with me.

Agree to disagree I suppose, it all comes down to personal preference really.

I could argue with this list all day long to be honest!! Peter Green, Slash, Tony Iommi, Paul Kossof, Tom Morello, Ritchie Blackmore, Gary Moore, Angus Young, Dave Gilmour could all argue the toss for a start. Modern ones? There aren't very many for me. Tom Morello is awesome and unique. Johnny Greenwood before Radiohead lost the plot. I like Matthew Bellamy. Squire was awesome with the roses too. He's probably not technically the greatest guitarist but I like Josh Homme too.

Subjectivity in music is an odd one though, to side step for a second. Imagine somebody trying to claim that some 19 year old girl singing about makeup via a vocoder is better than Beethoven's Hammerklavier. Bit ridiculous to suppose a situation where a musician puts months or years of sweat and blood into a clear theoretical and emotional masterpiece only to have some idiot's alphabet farting equivalent deemed as 'better' by some.
Obviously taste and preference in music is going to be subjective but there must surely be lines drawn somewhere when discussing what is 'better' than what.

<laugh> Probably, though I've only ever seen her name thrown around on this forum and have no idea who she is otherwise. From what has been said, I don't intend to find out!

The problem with that these days Skalpel, is that whilst music is still a big influence in culture, not many people are willing to explore music outside of the norm. So, because they've never heard of say, for example we'll use the John Mayer/SRV likeness, because they've heard of John Mayer and not SRV, they'll argue Mayer is better because they don't know any different. Yet, to anyone who can appreciate both, it's quite apparent who makes the better music.

EDIT:probably should point out that John Mayer's sound is very reminiscent of Stevie's for anyone that doesn't know.

Definitely agree, it's quite shocking that so many people are happy to be spoonfed culture to them; if they don't see it on TV or hear it on the Radio then they suppose it just isn't worth listening to. It also makes for a very sterile and business-controllable environment when new popular artists are such listeners themselves and thus are influenced only by previous popular artists, being oblivious to the idea of looking outside the norm, as you put it.

The depressing thing is when artists such as Ed Sheeran are being hailed as one of the best artists of this decade already, purely because he sings with an acoustic guitar!

Very sad really, there are so many interesting progressions in music now; all below the radar. Business and money has always played a major role in an artists career, even going back centuries, but it truly has a vice like grip on it now - sadly taking very few risks and playing it safe; churning and churning out more that will sell. Most people aren't stupid but they're being treat as though they are, what they are is just not interested in anything that doesn't fit into their daily routine unfortunately and this is what is latched onto. If they can have a handful of demographical fixes on the commute then all is well.
