Don’t like to agree with him but Arsene Wenger’s idea of offside is a good one and would clear up a lot of issues.
agreed, Werner didn’t do a lot. But 2 assists and being involved in the goal yesterday isn’t a bad start in a few games from someone who’s barely played any minutes recently. All we’ve seen from Gil since he joined is “running about a bit”. (And a lot of time spend on the grass after being pushed over)
agree. I also think that Bentancur and Hojbjerg were really poor yesterday and we were essentially bossed in midfield for a large part of the game. That was our biggest problem that led to little control we had, and was a major factor in all the other smaller issues mentioned. nothing we could have done about it, but it was a game where we really needed bissouma and Sarr. (One totally unavailable, the other just returning).
Bentancur and Maddison not being 100% match fit certainly played a part too Hojbjerg’s legs going this season also didn't help
This is the kind of rubbish the modern game in England includes. Spurs scored 2 goals with football skills . Everton score two with foul play and that's fine. Then insult is added by acusing Vicario of being weak. I sometimes wonder why I watch football.
I said this yesterday. I don’t think Vicario’s been weak. I think many goalkeepers would struggle. I’m also of the opinion that the two controversial decisions aren’t necessarily fouls either, more foul tactics. And we need to do the same if that’s the case. It’s a credit to Vicario in a way, that this is what teams are resorting to as he’s such a good shot stopper.
Before any says foul play has always been in the game, yes that's true but was not accepted by referees and pundits as OK.
Impeding a player is a foul. It is not a grey area. Holding a player is a foul it is not a grey area. The only grey is Oliver not enforcing the rules.
Oliver likes to let the game flow in doing so he is not enforcing the rules. If you do that in open play if the advantage is with the fouled team that's fine. In the goal mouth it's nonsense.
Vicario should be stronger? How? Push the player off him? The player would fall to the ground as if shot and a penalty would be awarded. Place one of our players in front of Vicario? So we impede ourselves? No it's why you need a referee to enforce the rules
Sorry for the multiple posts I am using my phone as I watch the cricket. A game where the rules are not changed to suit the umpires mindset.
IIRC Alisson was often targeted that way when he first arrived Of course, one week-long temper tantrum from Norbert stopped that being an issue ever again
We now enforce offsides to the millimetre while saying it's OK to deliberately back into a goalkeeper. Crazy.
Is it not likely that Oliver said to Everton at halftime that he would enforce the rules if they did it again? I.ve let you get away with that in the first half but I won't again. That's corruption isn't it?
I do realise that there are grey areas in football. Mistimed tackles for example or coming together as two players go for the same ball. But things like holding a player or deliberately blocking a player are clear and unambiguous. Playing advantage is a good option if properly used BUT treating other rules as grey is to turn the game into a lottery laced with corruption.
While I am on this thread I would like to say that Richarlison looks like a 60 million striker. 9 goals from 8 games that's Kane/Son levels.
Players can stand as close to the goalkeeper as they like. What they can't do is then move towards him and impede him. The Everton player was clever enough to only make a slight movement so got away with it.
Dyche said something along those lines - but his players apparently "forgot" about their warning and carried on doing it regardless Of course Dyche called over the players to remind them the first time they did it in the second half to set them straight so they wouldn't forget again...
