Just tell them you need the cash to go to the away games to support the lads and I'm sure they'll understand and not cause any problems.

I'll be working as I'm not in the union (monthly memberships about an hours pay, doesn't make much sense to me to then strike over pay...) but I also don't particularly agree with the cause either. Even with public sector cuts my job and pension are much safer than anyone in my role in the private sector. If I want more money or a higher pension I'd best work harder and get a promotion is how I see it.

Can't afford to lose a days pay either really.

Just go in if you need the money mate. They can't exactly call you selfish (look what they are striking about) and if they are your mates they should understand anyway. You aren't even part of a union so you can't strike with them.

Just say your going in to use the Gym or Pool. I don't think they are allowed in the building whilst they are on strike so they will never no either way! Or arrive before they get there :)

I can sympathis with Fire Fighters and Nurses etc. but when you seen the Civial Servants in my office bitching and going on strike when you know they are on a top wage and still bitch about paying into their own pension for their future retirement it really boils my piss.
I'd love the company to just ****in sack the lot of them for being so ****in greedy.

I work 55 hours per week for far less than a fireman and fair enough, they occasionally put their lives on the line, but that in itself shouldn't be grounds to ask for a better wage as they've already been employed primarily to do just that! If they don't want to put themselves in harm's way, why sign up to be a firefighter?

I'm sorry, call me cynical but when they went on strike that time I just wished they'd all considered how much our troops are being paid.

The same could be said for our troops, I'm going into the army, I know how much I'm going to get paid and what I have to do for it. The troops all applied to do that job, so shouldn't complain. I don't know many who complain like.

In terms of the original article, go to work, I don't agree with the strike either, they get the best pensions around and are just being greedy in my opinion.

    Totally agree!

The firefighters weren't striking over money, it was over shift change and reducing the amount of workers on each shift to dangerous levels, so the goverment can save money. Just like the goverment tried to do with the police a year back or so! Pretty sure most people would strike if their job position was changed and stretched so they are at basic breaking point in regards to their own personal health and the publics health.

I was brought up to believe that all we have as workers is our own solidarity in the face of basically uncaring bosses who operate by shady webs of influence. Regardless of the reason for striking, I would never cross a picket line. The selfish short-sightedness of some people on this thread typifies why the unions are so ineffectual in this country.

The bosses are only too ready to scratch each other's back at the Rotary Club, Freemasons' Lodge or whatever; we should do the same.

Sorry, but stop this "they're all heroes lark".

They don't have second jobs to make ends meet. It's because the union has negotiated over the years SO much time off with shifts etc
The stations are manned the same overnight even though the day time action is twice as much
These lads can RETIRE at 50 with enough service. Can you?
Pensions can be 70% of FINAL wage. Is yours???

So this strike is nothing but protecting very nice pension pots for ever, and not facing up to REALITY that we cannot afford it as Taxpayers.

And before anyone tells me "it's a dangerous job etc etc".......no one asks them to join. Better a fireman than a front line soldier in Afghanistan. Now that REALLY deserves danger money.

Soldiers do get deployment to theatre pay.

Whereas a fireman faces danger every single day as part of their role some squaddies go years without seeing combat. Don't get me wrong I'm all for better pay for servicemen.

As for Leazes issue, it sounds like he will have to work with these people everyday after the strike which could make it tricky for him which the difference between that OT's casual labour during a strike as OT didn't have to deal with the strikers everyday.

I know plenty of police officers, men and women, plus a couple of firefighters. The firemen hardly get called into action compared to the police who have to deal with murderers, rioting, drugs gangs, fire arms, suicides, domestics, drunk & disorderly, armed robberies, high speed chases etc etc every day. Just think about how often you see the police flying about compared to firetrucks.

Like I said before, my working hours have shot up to over 55 hours per week in the last couple of years of recession and I'm making less money at the same time. I don't see how anyone else should be exempt from this because the ones complaining were most likely being overpaid or have ridiculously expensive (for the taxpayer) pension schemes.

That's the biggest problem with our country right now, everyone expects everything on a plate and can't see what will happen if we continue to throw money about like the old (pre 2007) days.

God I sound like Derek Llambias.
