French farmers are moving hundreds of tractors into place as a blockade of major roads, termed the "siege of Paris", gets under way Similar demonstrations are taking place across the country as part of continuing protests against falling incomes, rising bureaucracy and competition from imports Protests are also being held in Belgium and Germany, where tractors are blocking routes leading to Hamburg's port area https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-europe-68126373 It looks like the EUROPEAN UNION is having big troubles. Glad we are out of it.
I thought Labour would of been all over re joining, not a dicky, and nothing from the LDs. Maybe its not as bad as some are trying to make out?
The North East voted to leave. The North East is mainly Labour. Labour would be shooting themselves in the foot if they tried that. Don’t know about you but my life hasn’t changed in any sort of way because of Brexit.
I am worse off financially, my job is less secure and there is a very real chance I will be gone in a year. Down to Brexit 100%. I could start on the complete disaster it is to our long term economic prospects, but that is only opinion so wont bother. It is categoric fact Brexit has been bad for me and therefore my family.
No not really, anytime it’s mentioned you think it would be a landslide majority. I’m not so sure myself. Whenever something gets mentioned bad about here, if I ring my mates in Spain or France they reckon it’s just as bad or s hitter still over there.
Doesn't look like leaving has helped our farmers much either ... Lancashire farmers fear they will go out of business post-Brexit 29th January 2024 please log in to view this image Helen Drinkhall said upland farms had limited options "An upland farmer is worried she will go out of business after a loss of income has left the farm "treading water". Changes to subsidies since the UK left the European Union has seen support for some farms fall by 37%, the National Farmers' Union (NFU) has said."
Has anyone seen what is happening in France, Italy and Germany? Doesn’t look like being in the European Union is doing much good for their farmers
Good morning Smug. I have read this morning that farmers in France want more money, and are threatening to block all roads into Paris.
Yep. Over regulation by the EU. It’s not just France, there’s farmers from 13 countries within the EU that are protesting. https://www.politico.eu/article/european-parliament-eu-farmers-protest-fizzles-brussels/
Quite right, it's all over the news. They like a strike over there, much like the ones we're suffering with in the NHS, transport, etc. I'm well aware that Europe isn't perfect and you'll always find reasons to criticise as I did while we were in tge EU ... ... but it's one thing pointing out faults in the EU another listing all the benefits we were promised for leaving.
I am sure your aware of my theory on why the Brexit will not work. It will be of interest in the forthcoming election how the parties position on it stand.
I do mate, just makes me wonder why something so many people disagree with was bulldozed through by Boris and his JCB tbh ... ... there were so many, in the Tory party, who disagreed but would've cut us off from the entire world if it meant handing them a seat on the gravy train. Sunak is as weak as I've ever seen and has no chance of making things happen. He's ignoring the strikes, the NHS crisis, etc and laying down laws about vapes, big dogs and why Rwanda is safe while accepting their refugees. Very poor situation all round and billions thrown away for no benefit.
i remember when people complained that farmers got too much help, fact is, they did ok 'in the old days' before they were told exactly what to grow and how much of it but much the same as everyone else they were basically ignored after brexit. as things stand now, especially with the growing threat of russia looking likely to go for more land, europe needs to get it's house in order and come up with a better idea, namely on that does not favour the rich getting richer. get the farms working again, just around this village we had cereal, potatos, meat and milk yet now i see fields of hay...get the fishermen going again, does not need to be massive but could help the coastal towns and villages...get some industry back in the country and get those skills back that we are losing, i may well be rather ignorant of a lot political bumff but ffs at least lay some foundations, the people can do wonders with a little 'leg up'. brexit is over and the people were badly let down, a decent government would do whatever they could to get the country going again.
I have never understood Sunak, with his money, why is he even a MP, let alone prime minister? As mentioned, the issues you have raised, and I'm sure there are plenty more we could agree on, to see how the parties position themselves on those issues. I always thought that first pass the post was alright as it gave the winner some governing strenght in office, but not so sure now. What l am sure of, is we need a better class of politicians.
We import way too much of the produce we could grow ourselves. Although the crisis in shipping shows how dangerous it is to abandon trade with Europe and seek deals on the other side of the world. Farmers are struggling now and crops left to rot through a lack of people to pick them.
