Cheers mate. I've had various pubs, over the last 50 years, and shifted around for various reasons. It started out with the Blue Bell where we'd wait for the away fans getting off the train and walking past. Then we had a spell in town, at the Continental, where we'd meet up with a bunch of local lunatics. Then we went to the Greens for a while, can't remember why, then the Sappers/Fort/Navy. At one point we were with Frankie Wheatley's mob at the Boilermakers and, in a season of absolute madness went into Newcastle, with our colours on, and drank in the Hofbräuhaus pre-match. It was crazy with Mags leaving Central Station for their away game, strippers and an inevitable punch up. We were eventually photographed and told never to come back, our photos were still in the entrance a year later I'm now in a bit of a loop because my train arrives an hour and a half before kick off. I have just enough time for some scran and a couple of pints before I go in. I miss the days when we'd stop at the Mallard in Seaham or have a few hours in the Victory then the Wheatsheaf but times change as you've found out ... ... no doubt we'll have a few pints somewhere, before we drift off to that big boozer in the sky, who knows who we'll find there
Aye been going in the Navy club every home game for about 25+years now (actually when the sappers club closed opposite)
The Boilermakers and The Continental were 2 of mine, I had seven stitches in my hand having been hit by a bottle before a game with the mags in there, it was like a scene from an old western movie that day
It was around that time, I was trying to get served at the bar and all hell broke lose, pool cues, pool balls, ash trays, bottles and glasses being hoyed about, mirror behind the bar got put out, I have never seen anything like it It was a good Friday, away to Leeds on the Saturday and Man u at home on the Monday, I was stitched in the hospital and didnt miss any of the game
That’s the one marra, aye it was mayhem we were all in a packed Beehive and got the word that they were skunks in the Continental, and aye what a busy weekend that was
We had just been in The Vestry, I drank my pint quickish, knew it was The Continental next so left sharp to get to the bar first, I didnt even notice them in the corner playing pool, I was at the bar "2 pints of scotch and a pint of lager" Then the rest of the lads came in, and I heard, "what are yous doing in here you black and white bastards?" Lights , camera, action
Normally call in gunners cooper rose Jameson then bus over However Saturday we went to bourgh beehive can’t remember this bar across the road from Sinatras Then bus over
Yep being changed as you say. No food offerings when it reopens which is a shame. Purely wet sales. Same staff and manageress.
boilermakers...quite often i was in there afore a match, half decent turn (that no fecker wanted on stage) and three or four strippers (hence why the turn was never wanted) the last ripper always ended up a nervous wreck as the doors burst open and everyone headed to Roker Park during her act, could guarantee several kids waiting outside the exits to get a look at the ripper.
The only band that got a good reception was The Big Picture Show ... ... "You make me stand on my head and fart", I seem to recall was their most popular song.
From time to time I used to pick up a very good mate of mine to go to the match. He wasn't a die hard, but his brothers went, and,as I picked him up this day,his furious missus was at the door, shouting "he's not interested in the football....he's off to see the strippers with the rest of them!! " Needless to say,he made his own way home!
Big Picture were fantastic, I was in there before a mags game and they were getting everyone chanting, also did a fantastic version of this, I must have been in there a good few times when you were, it was also my Saturday night haunt for a while, had my 18th in there, one of the committee blokes came over and said you have been coming in for 2 years! I was also asked to loosen a suspender belt by one of those ladies (she was lush BTW) no idea how my hand didnt shake
Anyone out in the town on Sunday? If so where? I have been invited to my sisters which is in Bedale, but would rather be down the town
