All of this got me suddenly very interested in the 1921/22 team Apart from the record which has suddenly revealed itself in recent weeks I knew nothing. well the good news is the team won the inaugural division three south season, but only by goal difference, bettering Plymouth by +7. The club set another two records that year. Some of you would have noticed from the list Libby printed that they beat Northampton 8-0, a record which was only matched relatively recently by Pelle & co. The other record was a national record, the team only conceded 21 goals that season, which remained a record across the football league for a 42 game season until 1978/79 when Liverpool won the first division conceding just 16 goals. The 21 goals of course remains a club record. Tommy Allen was the clubs keeper and the team didn’t concede in the final 7 games of the campaign. It was a full 845 minutes without conceding before Leeds got one past Allen in the August of the following season. Bill Rawlings scored 30 league goals that season, including a run of scoring in 7 consecutive games at the start of the 20 game streak. He also scored four goals in the 8 nil against Northampton and bagged all four in a 4-2 win against Millwall. Bill was certainly the superstar of the 1920s for saints as he scored 175 goals between 1919 & 1928, with the majority of his career in the old 2nd division following the promotion in 1922. Saints reached the FA Cup semi finals twice in 1925 and 1927.
This really could be a record breaking season and the double ton of league points and goals are definitely on. The highest points tally is currently 92 achieved in the League 1 promotion season of 2010/11, the next highest was the Championship promotion season of 2011/12 (88). The only time the club has scored 100 goals in a league season was in 1959/60 (106) and 1963/64 (100).
19 games to go - we’re on 50 goals so it will be an average of 2.6 goals per game. That seems a bit of a stretch. We’re currently averaging 2 points a game, so 38 points on top of our 55 would break our points tally by 1 - COYR
A quality run and although I've not been going to too many games recently, it sounds like we're getting better? There was a period where we looked like we struggled to score a second, and were a bit vulnerable at 1-0 e.g. the Huddersfield, Watford etc draws, but hopefully we can keep up the goal scoring form. The only negative would be those few games we've drawn. On another day, Huddersfield, Rotherham, Watford and Norwich could all have been wins, with an additional 8 points, but I'm not sure we can complain!
The thing is that we are improving and scoring more goals recently, it's unlikely but if we can start to score a few more away from home it's not impossible.
Swansea done. Rotherham away, Hudders at home, and Brizzle away to equal the all time record. Then WBA away to beat. Amazing run. Think I'd actually be disappointed if we didn't match the 24 now as stupid as that sounds. West Brom will be our toughest game for quite some time.
Probably right about West Brom being our toughest game, but their league form hasn’t been great for the last 10 games, ranked 10th. Currently losing at Norwich too.
33 games is the longest ever unbeaten run in the champ. That that was Reading. We couldn’t… could we?
And (I think) the top three longest in Football League history are Leeds (34), Forest (42), and Huddersfield (43). Leeds and Forest's records were both in the top flight. So presumably Reading's Championship record is second only to Huddersfield, for non-top flight unbeaten records in the Football League. Interestingly, a decent chunk of Huddersfield's 43 matches came in the L1 season when we pipped them to 2nd (they then carried their unbeaten run into the following season). This assumes that their play-off final defeat to Pboro is discounted, due to not being a normal league game.
Stating the obvious but 33 is a lot more than 20! Time to forget about the record again now that the next milestone is…miles off and focus on just winning the next game in front of us. I’m sure Martin and the team will be.
Though I've got this wrong as I was counting the cup game. We actually need to get past to Wba to equal. Hull at home would then be 25.
They should have kept it going for longer as well. The ref was an absolute joke in the United game that ended their streak. Gave United everything
