Anglesey does indeed have some fantastic beeches and some nice wildlife too, but I really loved Black Rock Sands. If you like this kind of thing the Ffestiniog railway is well worth a visit.
That's we went with the kids a couple of years back. Seemed alright to me but like all breaks, it is what you make it.
Well, they're cities - so the usual city stuff is there. If you like that sort of stuff they might be ok, but I've only briefly visited them so luv might give you some better info. There is St. ***an's National Museum there, it has reconstructed buildings from throughout the ages. Back in the North there's an activity centre called ZipWorld not far from Bangor - it has a number of activities, most of which seem to involve dangling from a wire over rocky terrain so I've never tried them. A bit safer is underground crazy golf in a repurposed mine in Blaenau Ffestiniog, where the obstacles are constructed from old mining equipment. Underground is a pretty good place to be in Blaenau as it has its own personal rain cloud that only seems to have half an hour per year off. The Ffestiniog Railway mentioned by @Gerrardsitchyear above is also there.
Those are the only places in the South of Wales I ever got to visit. Been all over the North, but the only time in the South was in that South Eastern part. That and Newport. I remember Newport was a bit of a dump. Again, that was 30+ years ago... So might be lovely now. My recollection of Leeds, in as an example was a bit of a dump, but I'm told it's lovely now.
Tenby is nice in the South. We've been to Newport (the one near Fishguard) every year for the last 3 years and going again in May. We also make an annual trip to Skomer when we're there to see the puffins (there aren't really any puffins anymore on puffin island off the coast of Anglesey).
Yeah - very busy though nowadays. I thought there were still some puffins on Puffin Island. Not many though and they're not easy to see. I've seen some on a boat trip around the island (you can't land on it) but that was admittedly about 15 years ago. They only stay for a few weeks to breed then head off back North. Lots of other seabirds around there, and sometimes seals - if Noz's family are interested in that sort of thing.
As I understand it, there were loads of puffins but then rats were mistakenly introduced to the Island and the puffins were almost wiped out. But the council then started a poisoning Program so that the rats have now been eradicated and the puffin numbers are increasing. Puffins are big hits with the family so that or Skomer sound good, as do steam trains and the zip line place. Apparently all the rabbits on the Island were wiped out by myxamatosis. Quite the violent wildlife history.
That's about it, but like I said puffins are only around early - until sometime in June iirc, so you have to time it right. If your kids like imprisoned wildlife there's the Welsh Mountain Zoo in Colwyn Bay.
There's a handful in puffin island yes, but thousands on Skomer! Yeah, we saw say seals around puffin island and also some porpoises.
On Skomer? Loads of rabbits there now. Also razorbills, guillemots, Shearwaters etc and I saw a peregrine year before last. Last yeah, the volunteers were really excited because they had house sparrows around the farm, they're rarely seen on Skomer.
No, that was Puffin Island. Skomer sounds good but it does look like it's miles away from most other things I've been looking at. And in late July I'm guessing there may not be many puffins left anyway.
