Sounds like he's more like a Stuart Armstrong than a Downes. TBH it could be a very shrewd move.

Still seems strange to me whether he’s a DM, AM or any other kind of central midfielder. We have Downes, Charles, Smallbone, Stu, Alcaraz, Aribo. All playing well, but not all can play. Why do we need another option there unless someone is leaving? Purely to cover Aribo at AFCON? Not like that even leaves us short.

Is the guy that broke this news legit?

Not sure, am not familiar with him either.

However, no double barrel, so I have huge reservations

He's a decent enough Championship CM. Did well for Blackburn previously. But I don't quite know why we're looking at that area of the pitch?

Importantly, it's a no obligation loan. I've said since we were first relegated that I didn't want to fill our squad with permanent signings who are good for the Championship but not good enough for the PL. One of the major reasons for our relegation was having too many players who weren't good enough for the PL. Hence I've been a big advocate of the loan market this season, which means I'm happy with this.

I agree. Assuming it doesn’t impact us bringing anyone else in in a position we having more pressing need to strengthen, then as an extra option until the end of the season it’s fine. Not sure it’s that necessary but you don’t know what’s going to happen between now and seasons end so happy to strengthen even if on the face of it we are already fully stocked in the middle.

I have a mate who works at Blackburn, so I asked for his thoughts:

Loved watching Joe for us. An amazing dribbler and possibly quicker with the ball than without it. Very exciting player and big mates with Arma, so no surprise with this move. You'll really enjoy watching him play.

Normally think our loan business is pretty poor.

That is of course until the ****ing hero that is Ryan Fraser rocked up. If this guy is half the player Fraser is welcome aboard!

It seems like often Aribo and Alcaraz have been deployed as “False 9s”. So this perhaps points to more of that and just going ahead without another striker option despite the Stewart injury. Let’s face it we are not going to be able to permanently sign a striker that could also do a job in the premier league. And strikers are at such a premium that any half decent ones are probably not going to be available for loan

Doesn’t seem like an area we’re crying out for. Striker and a right winger are priorities atm.

**** all to complain about mate. Its brilliant :azn:

We're playing some lovely lovely stuff. I'm enjoying going to St Mary’s for the first time in donkeys. We've got a team who are actually playing as a team and all of the lads seem to care and put in a shift. If you told me last year (after the Forest at home debacle) that Bazunu , Bednarek, A Armstrong, Aribo would be ****ing incredible this season I'd have looked if it was possible to get a stranger officially sectioned!

Add to that Ryan Fraser might actually be better than Maradona and I'm one happy Saint.

    We are ****ing massive :1980_boogie_down:

I feel like this also frees up Stuart Armstrong to operate off the right side of the pitch instead of deeper as he has been. That would probably suit him better and give us another strong option in a position where we do need more options.

Also means that Russ can just put “Armstrong” on the right wing in sharpie for the rest of the year. Lazy sod.

Yeah this, players like Fraser and Downes were always going to be shrewd additions this year. Just hope the club aren’t idiots and try and make them permanent if we do go up
